OFFICIAL 2012 Fall MAHHA Hang Oct. 19-21, Maryland

Here is the official thread announcing the 2012 Fall MAHHA. Everyone welcome!
Where: Gathland State Park in Maryland
When: 3rd weekend in Oct. which is Oct. 19, 20, 21.
What the heck is a MAHHA? Mid-Atlantic Hammock Hangers Association OR (thanks to CrankyBear) Most Awesome Hammock Hang Around

Excel Sign-up Sheet here. Please add your name, etc. if planning to attend. It helps us keep count for Sat. potluck dinner. Additional pages on the Excel sheet are: “Agenda” so people can see what goes on and also a “Backpacking” page where hikers can announce hikes. People can see at a glance who is hiking where.

The MAHHA Hang will be located, again, above the shelter at Crampton Gap on the AT in Maryland. The trail to the hang is accessed via the parking lot at Gathland State Park, MD. Map attached.

This is a family event, so kids and dogs are always welcome!!! (Leashes required for pets at pavilion.)

Plans include a Saturday night potluck. Setup and prep starts at 4 pm, group picture at 5 pm, and eating starts after group pic. A raffle hosted by Jacks-R-Better follows dinner. Burgers and hot dogs are provided. Please bring a dish to share. Raffle prizes are donated by various vendors and people just bring stuff and add it to the table which makes for a lot of prizes and a fun raffle. Feel free to donate a prize.

Money donations for tickets pay for the pavilion, burgers, etc. Money from raffle is also donated to Hammock Forums, a great tradition started by the Jacks. A $10 per person donation is requested, which gets you 1 raffle ticket per person plus dinner under the pavilion. Additional raffle tickets can be purchased for $10 each. Bring flashlight and jacket for hike back to camp.

(Sorry, no alcohol at the pavilion. I didn’t buy the alcohol permit!)

    Directions to MAHHA Hang Site
Map to hang site attached. The camping area is less than 1/2 mile from parking area. Very well marked trail. Most veterans hike in a camp chair to be comfortable around the camp fires. You should too!

Pavilion: The pavilion we use for Sat. night potluck can be seen from parking area. We pay for full day so feel free to use it any time on Saturday. (You can hang out there other days too but only if it is not in use by other paying group. Mostly it's used in summer. I can't remember another group using it when we've been there.)

Bathrooms: There are bathrooms across the street from pavilion. There is an outhouse by the AT shelter. (Ladies - sometimes the outhouse is not very clean and you either use the bathrooms back at the parking lot or find a good tree for a little privacy. Just fair warning.)

Water: A water pump is next to the bathrooms. Good place to get water. There is a stream near the hang site by the AT shelter but it may be dry depending on weather.

You can thank BugBait for this name! Mid-Atlantic Hammock Hangers Association! It's a great association. Anyone can be a member. No dues, no meetings, it runs itself pretty much. Every once in a while we get together to camp, eat, and shoot the breeze.

Decisions, decisions, on what dish to bring. Last year I brought my Death by Chili, made with tomatillo plus habanero, cayenne, and jalapeno peppers from my garden. However, it was too darn hot for most folks and I had leftovers.

For the NJ Winter Hang 2012, I brought collard greens and black-eyed peas. I would have thought people would prefer the black-eyed peas, but there were leftovers, while the collard greens disappeared.

    I don't like leftovers.
