You're definitely not alone! I hike & hang mostly solo but would not hesitate to go to a group hang.
If you did feel uncomfortable you could always pack up and move on!

Actually, The hangs I have been at have had about equal numbers of men and women. The guys have been really nice, so don't be afraid to join in on a hang. There are way more women hangers than I even imagined. It is nice to know that we are well represented in the trees.
You can tell I am a woman by the hat !
You can not tell the gender of the sleeping hanger.
The numbers are less, but we are well represented.

My wife is a hanger and attends group hangs with me. Every group hang I have been to has had folks of all ages, men woment, kids, old young ect, hikers, car campers ect. I suspect some of of those female hangers know more about hanging than I do.
At my first hang I was amazed at the can do attitude of the more expierenced hangers dropping what they were doing to help a first time hanger attending with his family to make sure he got set up ok and reassuring him he was doing great.
Going to the group hangs has gotten my wife to sign up for a sewing class so she can learn to use our thread injector as she said she is tired of going to hangs and being the only female there who doesn't know how to sew (of course she is making me go with he to the classes and I told her not a problem as I will probably be the only guy there and if I have problems I am sure the other women there will be happy to help me, she then muttered a few words I could not make out )
The main thing is go and have fun. If things go ok I will be attending two hangs this Sept.

New to hanging, not to hiking and packing. My daughter prefers the hammock, too. Way more comfy than the ground!
For those of you afraid of hiking alone, try meetup.com . I am an organizer for our regional backpacking group, and there are often as many girls as their male counterparts, with loads of different groups to choose from. I was a little nervous at first, but have hooked up with a great group of people. Of course, still exercise a little caution: YMMV
Plan on meeting you at a MAHHA hang sometime. Will try to see you guys in October, but have a wedding on Saturday :-(
My wife would snatch the real snakes off the ground and beat you with them (not really, while she is not afraid of snakes she preferrs not to pick them up, one day when she was working in our pond I heard a loud scream and saw a bull frog go flying, she thought she had grabed a snake)I carry a novelty rubber snake when we hike together now. When she gets too pokey, I pull it out and wave it at her

What about a hermaphrodites hang?????? Hope that can be in the good humor that it was suppose to be
I just think it's funny
Matter of a fact I'm going to set up a group hang where parakets are allowed but no dang dogs, and you can bring your cat as well
