    Down Odor management

My son took his Burrow quilt to Philmont and it came back smelling, well like a stinky-headed teenage boy.

It is fairly new, and not actually "dirty", so I don't want to wash it. Has anyone used Febreeze Sport on any down products to remove odors? Here is the product I am talking about.
    Febreeze Sport Extreme Odor Eliminator

My wife bought this to use on his pack (the straps are also pretty smelly), but I want to see if anyone else has used it on down before I try it on the quilt.

I can't say for sure, but I'll offer a thought. The odor may be into the down itself, so you would have to spray a lot on it to penetrate the nylon - might as well wash it at that point. If you do try the spray, test it in a small area to make sure it won't fade or damage the fabric.

The best idea would be to hang it outside on a dry day...or even longer. Would you happen to have an ozone generator? Maybe ask some friends if they have one. I use one of these for "freshening up" my house a few times each year. You can put the quilt in a large trash bag and seal up around the output of the ozone generator...no more odor guaranteed! The ozone will leave a fresh odor itself, but one I always describe as "an approaching Spring thunderstorm"...which can be easily aired out outside after a couple hours.

Does the quilt have an outer nylon shell? Not familiar. I use baking soda. Apply liberally inside a yard trash bag and shake the quilt iside for a good couple of mins.

Tie a knot in the bag, and leave for a couple of hours, before shaking and leaving again for an hour more.

Then I vacuum, and the odors have gone. It has always worked for me.

I haven't washed any down. But I do know that folks used to say that hanging clothes in the sunshine did wonders--apparently the UV rays do a number on any bacteria that might be causing the odors. Worthy a try, no risk to the gear, and the price is certainly right. let us know what you discover.

Baking soda and sunshine were going to be my suggestions as well!

I have used parts cheap vodka and water in a spray bottle. Gave my down a good dosing and then into the dryer with 5 tennis balls on no heat for half hour / hour. Always worked so far.

Don't be afraid to wash down if that's what it takes. It's done easily and gently in a bath tub with warm water. I use Woolite or a product made specifically to wash down. Dry on LOW IN THE DRYER until COMPLETELY dry (otherwise mold may form). Easy peasy lemon squeezy!

You can also go to any sportings good store that has a hunting dept..and get some Scent Blocker that works and kills smells and scent instantly. Its a spray on that I use on myself as well as clothing and all gear for deer hunting. Most scent blockers are anti backtierial.

I always store mine in a large cotton sack and throw in a couple of dryer sheets, it may not help if it is to stinky but always keeps my bags and underquilts smelling fresh

I've used this product for years and it has NO scent at all and work miraculously. I haven't sprayed it on my quilts but I don't think it would harm anything.
