    Modifying a ready made tarp?

How hard would it be to modify my Noah 12 tarp to shorten the sides and make it easier to put it into storm mode? Has anyone does this with larger tarps? If so please let me know. If I need to just follow the normal tarp making guidelines then I'll do that. I'm just worried about messing up the rolled seams and the attachment points. If I do this I want to be sure I get the cuts correct and it works correctly. I know I can sew it right. I have enough confidence in my sewing now to do this if I need to. It's just the cutting that worries me.

I dont follow. Why would shortening the sides make it easier to put up in storm mode?

Well yes, but the tarp is designed to be put into a diamond shape. The outside edges (the four corners) are much longer than the center. I was wondering if I could cut them down to make the tarp a little smaller or if it was advisable. I'll add a link to what it actually looks like.

Then again. I have not tried this tarp in its original config. Hmm. LOL. I should try that as well and see if I like it. I'll still probably end up cutting it or getting another tarp.

Well running in diamond may be a problem. It would be 17FT from tip to tip. This might be worth trying. I cant do storm mode in diamond, but I can simply change it around. Its not that big of a deal. I just had the lightbulb go off in my head. I'll get back to this later. I'm going to try something with my tarp before I continue the thought process of modifying it.

I dont have links righ now, but it should take you 5 minutes with google or on HF to find pics of tarp in storm mode. I am not sure you have it pictured in your head correctly.

I found this one with a quick search. I know there are photos in a HF gallery somewhere, but apparently it's not tagged with "noah"...maybe the tag has a typo like your description has "Kelty noad 12"

theflb did that back in March with one of the GuideGear tarps. He converted it from a diamond to an hex.

    Hope it helps!

Thanks a bunch guys! The links helped me understand what I need to do with it. I think I will do this mod, its a little different than the others but I'll have to figure out how to cut the corners. I dont have anything that is long enough to use as a straight edge for this thing. I'll figure something out though. I'm not going from diamond to hex. I want to make it a little more rectangular instead.

Do I have to seal the areas that I cut and sew the hem? Does making it a cat cut help with doors or does that matter? Just wondering.

Not sure about the cat cuts, but the seam sealing on the hems is really up to you. I haven't with my tarp that I just finished, because the hems aren't going to be directly above my hammock and I don't mind if they drip through as long as the rain isn't driven straight through them onto the hammock. It would require a very hard-blowing storm to push the rain under the side of the tarp onto the hammock, and that would be true if I seam-sealed 'em or not.

As far as the straight-edge, do you have a porch or something similar where you could use the edge of that? I often use my shed's wooden boards as a spot to cut, since the flooring planks have a bit of space between them to use as a guide for my soldering iron.

    Hope it helps!
