    permethrin and insect repellent question

Not a new question but I can't find the answer I'm looking for. Does anyone know of a brand of permethrin that is odorless? The stuff I bought from Tractor Supply smells like kerosene. Also looking for a insect repellent that is odorless too (non-DEET). Man-made smells bug me in the outdoors!

Walmart has odorless permethrin. Don't know the brand name though.

The Sawyer brand that I use has no odor after it has dried.

Available at REI and many other vendors.

The Sawyer and the Coleman stuff didn't really smell after it dried. It had a slight odor that I noticed but nothing like kerosene.

Its sawyers, but it smells at first. Once it drys your good to go..As far as insect repellent, like Mosquito repellent, I'm am pretty sure they all have a smell. I think that's the purpose behind how it works. You could always just go for the citronella stuff. Not sure if it is as effective as Deet.

What I do if campfires are allowed. I build a small Twig Pyramid fire and lit it burn down on its own. I doesn't impact the environment very much and the smoke drives the mosquitoes away pretty good. Key words are "small" and "twig"

Sawyer's for the permethrin and one of the picaridin repellents like Sawyer's or Repel. The picaridin repellents have much less odor and I don't notice them once dried. Another plus is they don't melt plastics like Deet does.

    Picaridin 20%

Consumer Union and others have found this as long lasting and effective as DEET. -- 8 hours. I am looking at a new 3.5 ounce bottle of it, brand named "Natrapel", put out by the Tender Corporation in New Hampshire. Cost at Rite Aid chain drugstore in NJ was $3.50, with $2.50 of sale / voucher value, ended in July. Not odorless, but about the fragrance of an innocuous womens armpit deodorant from 10 meters.

Only big caution on picaridin / icaridin is to keep it away from the eyes, as it can irritate.

This surprised me for its neutrality in discussing alternatives:. http://www.picaridin.info/, including distinctly herbaceous oil of lemon eucalyptus.

It's in the camping or outdoors section at Meijer. I'd imagine the same area at Walmart.
