    Place Your bets! Tarp experiment...

I just ordered a polyester-silicone tarp with dimensions of 4,4 m x 4,4 m (14,4 ft x 14,4 ft). Weight is hefty 1,9 kg (67 oz). Polyesters is heavier than nylon but it should not stretch when wet. The diagonal is about 6,3 m (20 feet).

The idea is to use it pitched very high as a diamond shape tarp during summer. Just four points of attachment (trees and two corners to the ground). Easy pitching and easy to go in and out from hammock and around camp site (I hate those guy lines everywhere when walking around camp).

    So, what will happen?

    - Do those ground tie outs get pulled out in very low wind?
    - Ridgeline will be horrible saggy and collect water.
    - It will flap whole night and I do not get any sleep.
    - Guy line points will broke in heavier wind.
    - Everything will be OK.
    - "Your own suggestion".

Make Your bet now, I will report back when The Tarp arrives!

I'd say that at that weight, it will sag your ridgeline a bit. But other than that, I think you will be fine, without collecting water and such. At least it will provide some solid coverage! (Maybe enough to share)

A twenty foot diagonal you are planning to hang?! Monsterous! Like to see how high it needs to be to get your hammock under - send pics. Would love to see.

It depends on how much wind and rain you get. ;>) But I think under "nominal" conditions, you'll be just fine.

Are you using dyneema for all of your tie-outs? My guess would be that with conventional stakes they may pull out in moderate to strong winds, and I think Rampant is right that you'll get a little sag in your ridgeline but not enough to cause any problems. If you use more substantial ground anchors you'll be comfy all summer.

I do that with a 12x12 GG. Use a trucker's hitch on the rl so you can crank 'er tight, then stick a pole under those corners. Supplement your stakes with BFRs (big rocks), because that's a huge sail area for two little stakes.

-you fall out of tree while trying to tie the tarp ridge line high enough to make this monster work
-seeing the great expanse of coverage, homeless people will move in with you

    And the final answer...

My bet, use straps to avoid tree damage ant use two to three stakes at each guyline. That's big ole sail.

I'm wondering how you're going to get a hammock to go up under that thing. Your trees are going to be WAY far apart...which means that you're going to really struggle to get your hammock suspension up high enough to get a good angle on it...which then means that your tarp is going to be somewhere up in the canopy in order to keep it from interfering with your hammock suspension.

    Pics, or it didn't happen!

My bet is that you're going to struggle very hard to find a way to get the tarp strung up AND get the hammock strung up with the right (30 deg) angles on it. I won't say impossible, but I'm figuring a ladder is in your future.

    Tomorrow, Tomorrow!!!

Probably tomorrow it will be here.

    My favorite bets are:

    - seeing the great expanse of coverage, homeless people will move in with you

That would be nice, the more the merrier!

    - my bet, use straps to avoid tree damage

    Good point!

    - I'm figuring a ladder is in your future.

Another good point, I hope it will never happen.

But unfortunately I do not have time to test it before weekend and because I'm at work the whole weekend it can be that no testing until monday or tuesday...
