Underquilt is SO much better than a pad. I struggled with a pad my first whole season then someone talked me into buying a KAQ.

Wish I'd done that much sooner.

I also have a cheap mummy bag I bought at Dicks. I zipped up the zipper maybe 1/3 of the way then sewed it in place which gives me a nice foot pocket. I then pull it up and use it as a top quilt.

Slept into the 30's with that config and was nice and warm.

unzip sleeping bag as far as it will allow and lay it out in hammock zipper side up and sit in the middle of bag stick feet and legs in zip up to half way lay back zip the rest of the way if needed and enjoy leave zipper facing up will alow to vent heat if needed easier or to get out for those late night bladder breaks.

"All the way zipped"? Who, at our age, has the low mass, core strength, or flexibility of a dolphin to undulate and squirm and get "all the way zipped."

But seriously, I use and think of a mummy style sleeping bag as a top quilt. The zipper is used just to form a deep footbox.
