New Hanger and Heavy

I hung last weekend for the first time:

First I must say "Great Stuff"! BUT I had a problem with "Stretch" and expected some as I am about 300 lbs so I hung the hammock sat in it for a couple of minutes then re-adjusted. Then during the night I still had to "adjust" (re-tighten) the hammock two more times.

I used 11/16 "Tubed" webbing to hang the hammock. The distance between trees was about 16' to 18'. So that is a little further than I wanted and one of the trees was a little smaller than I wanted.

I guess the hammock stretched some, the webbing stretched some, and the tree leaned a little. All of which added up to alot stretch.

My question is how much of it was likely to be the hammock stretching (ENO DoubleNest)? And is it likely to happen everytime?

I have now purcashed 1" tubed webbing. And after reading another users suggestion, I have soaked the webbing in hot water to hopefully reduce any possible stretch.

hi and welcome...

tubular webbing is nylon webbing that is meant to stretch...(climbing purpose)

u need polyester or polypro webbing.. lots of vendor here you can get them from.

also it will help to remove the stock rope and biner that comes with the hammock. the actual hammock does not stretch that much....also available from plenty of vendors here...

I agree. Once you change your webbing, and close in that distance between the trees, you'll be hanging happy.

The packaging should tell you if it is poly or nylon. Try Ace hardware or a local supply store that has knowledgeable staff. I've found the folks at wallyworld and home depot only know where the time clock and break room is.

Something to consider is car towing straps...its usually low stretch and can handle a heavy load.

But as suggested by peanuts... I'd go with some of the vendors she listed. When I first started out, I tried all sorts of straps (including tubular straps for hiking, and even, I am ashamed to admit it, slap straps, uhg.). Having a motorcycle, I had plenty of tie-down towing straps. Not are made equal, and some do stretch. But even the ones that don't stretch will slip when wet (especially cold and wet). For example, backup knots on rings will become stopper knots. There is a reason that the tow buckles have teeth.

Strapworks is great and ships fast, but there might be some sewing involved (depending on how you set up, see Ray Mears or Ed Speers for setups). If you do sew your own, read the DIY section regarding quality thread. One of the things I learned in researching my motorcycle gear is it isn't the material that breaks first... it is the stitching.

The best straps I have had to date are from AHE. Overbuilt and great for heavy people like us. My suggestion is to get a pair from AHE, even just to see what high quality materials and construction looks and feels like. The straps that come from other vendors as part of setups (e.g., Warbonnet, Dutchware) work great too. But I have had other vendors who sent me stuff that might be better for ligher hangers. Having the AHE straps helped me be a better judge of what it should look like and feel like.

I'm in the "X-Large" category of hanger as well.

Im 250lbs and use the AHE straps and whoopies works great .....
