    Hole in Elephant Trunk

Does anyone have an idea what the hole in Elephant Trunks is for? The paper that comes with the Elephant Trunk says "Hole not to be used during set up or while hammock is under load." Weight reduction? Aesthetics? I think it makes for a perfect spot to connect a SRL.

Not sure. I always figured it was to attach a tarp Hennessy Hammock style.

Probably weight reduction. Us gram weenies would punch holes in our hammocks if we could get away with it!

From SmartOutdoors FAQ about elephant trunks:

    Q. Can I hang items from the hole and what is its purpose?

    A. The elephants trunks were not designed nor tested with this in mind. However, if a tarp line or water catch was attached to the hole no issues should occur but pitch on the tarp might be a concern.

It was solely intend as weight savings. You can hang a semi empty pack or hook a tarp to it but as said, it was for weight. I have concerns with hooking tarps due to tension issues so I'd advice using shock cords at the point of attachment.

I was just curious as I wanted to attach a hammock ridge line from that point.

I can and do have amsteel running between the two holes as an upper ridgeline for my tarp to be prussiced onto. I've had no problems with it so far (I'm on the lighter end of the range though). Note that that is my doings and not bloomgorge's recommendations.
