Talking Newbie from the west, To sleep on the ground/or to hang (from experience)

Not new to hanging, just the forum. Thanks for putting it out there for everyone. I've found a few things in a short time that I had not thought of in lots of years of Hanging. While traveling I've hung in every climb and place that I could take my hammock. Here are some of the reasons I hang.

    Ground dwelling:
    [/LIST]brings you closer to nature

    · I love bringing dirt home in all of my sleeping gear

    · I can always find a rock or something cold to sit on

    · Mother nature will always provide a lump for a pillow

    · Waking to a sticky bush pillow makes for great bed head that lasts all day:

    · Pad hunting in the middle of the night is one of my favorite pastimes (sometimes I do it all night)

    · When sleeping on a hillside you can always hug a tree:boggle

    · When your back hurts in the morning you don’t have to worry about falling down getting out of bed

    · Knowing that I kept a family of scorpions warm all night makes me feel good

    · Snuggling with snakes is a great adrenaline rush

    “Hanging” out:

    · I don’t have to pack a chair

    · “A little” distance between me and nature is a good thing

    · If my back hurts in the morning I can just go back to sleep

    · I always have a soft place to lay my head

    · Hangin’ out is fun to do

    · I still like being rocked to sleep

    · Hugging a tree doesn’t mean I have to wrap myself around it to stay on the side of the hill

    · The view is always better with some elevation

    · No critters have tried to “snuggle” with me (yet)

    · I like making my friends jealous

    What causes your hangin' hankerin'?

Great post and warm welcome to the forums. I happened to notice your hammock is homemade string...Any plans on sharing how you made such a hammock? Not too many people I know of use a string design for camping. What's the weight and materials?

My forum name is Fish<><; I'm in the navy; and I hate sleeping on the ground. If I didn't need ground to walk on or measure resistance to, I think I could happily give it up.

Handmade string, wish I could say homemade I'm not that patient. A group of guys I met overseas made them to raise funds for their organization. I paid some insanely cheap price for the thing. I believe it is made from nylon string tied every inch or so with a sheep shank. It rolls up about the size of a softball and weighs in at a total of 12.3 oz suspension and all. The suspension is 6 ft nylon webbing used for climbing. The thing is super tough I've used the death out of it and it still looks like new. It got my messed up back off the ground and I haven't looked back.

I like the string for it's versatility, however I have never tried the other side, ...yet! ( ripstop nylon etc...). The string/mesh is a great survival tool. Your imagination is its only limit, fish net, trap, camouflage, shooting rest, you name it it'll adapt with a little creativity. Mine is a bit short by most standards 8'6" but then so am I.

I have only found one draw back so far. I can't take it camping with the family because it causes a raucous. So I set out to find several more for the family as yet no luck on a similar type quality hammock and I have been unable to reconnect with it's creators. However I did find the forum and am at present gearing up for some new gear for the whole family DIY style.

I'm not much of a social computer guy but the forum grabbed my attention. Now if I can figure out how this navigation thing works I could check on my posts and answer comments in a more timely fashion. I lost this post for nearly a month. Someday I'll get the "hang" of it. Till then I'll just keep Hangin.
