they make snow stakes, someone also mentioned before about tying your line around the center of the stake and using it like that laiod on it's side. i think it was even mentioned you could put that through a cd for even more snow gripping power.

pileing snow up against the bottom edge can be good for blocking wind and windblown snow from coming in under the edge.

Those SMC snow stakes work like a champ, you have to give the snow time to "set" in the holes in the stakes.

Tie to other trees, use snow anchors (like a stuff sack, filled with snow, tied to your cord, and buried in the snow), etc. And of course it depends on the type of snow. Lots of options for most conditions, though. There are several pics in the gallery on snowy setups. I don't remember what the snowpack was at Winnemucca where my pics came from...something like 8' or so.

I just got back from a weekend in Allegany National Forest. Slept in my Claytor Mosquito Hammock with an Equinox 8x10 tarp set up as a Baker's Hut to block the wind. Tarp was attached to the ground via some sticks I pushed into the snow and then poured water on to cause them to freeze. I had a -20* down bag and used a couple of ccf's in the claytor pad sleeve. Temp at night got to -5*F. Was warm and toasty.

We had over 30 swinging from the trees at the Mt Rogers hangout last weekend, got down to about 11 or so Sat night. Yep, you can hang in the winter.

HAHAHA - that's great. 'Cept I like hiking in them all, so I guess for me there's only one season.

I think we've proven that temps are relatively easy to conquer in a hammock. It's the stormworthiness of a tarp vs a mountaineering tent that's still open to questioning. But at the same time, I wouldn't take a mountaineering tent into a winter storm unless I knew how to survive if it failed...I guess a hammock/tarp is just another version of which gear to know how to live without when the situation arises.

Yeah - standard winter survival skills...snow trenches, caves, etc. That's why I like having at least a torso pad as backup, especially in winter.
