Question Brainstorming the project of a lifetime...

Got to thinking about this the other day and was curious; Has anyone tried to make a net gathered end style hammock (one without spreader bars) and/or mayan/brazilian hammock for indoor sleeping (mayan and maybe the net style too)? If so please post/repost your efforts. I want to learn how to do this.

The reason I ask is because I would be interested on improving my line handling skills (splicing, weaving, etc.) and got to thinking about traditional type of hammocks. A good portion of the early hammocks in the world are a net type of hammock and I'd like to have something like that in my slowly growing arsenal of hammock gear. Sure I can buy a mayan or brazilian hammock for around $80, but I think it would be a true experience to see what older generations did back in the day before modern machinery.

Though it might be a long drawn out process, I'd be interested to know what types of materials, different weave designs (mayan, brazilian, etc.), and whatever other knowledge I need to get a project like this started. I want to feel accomplished when complete with my next DIY as it will be my indoor full-timer.

BTW this is a brainstorming session more so than solid plans.

I appreciate any response, and as always, all are welcome to comment.

Note* I do realize that net hammocks have a different feel and lay to them. I am not concerned with the lines digging into my back, as I will take that into account prior to construction should I decide to make a net style mock.

When I was a kid, my dad had a net hammock with no spreader bars. I think he got it in mexico in the 60's. Might even have been natural fibers. I remember my dad cutting the lawn and then napping in it. It definitely was not tippy like the spreader bar kind. Anyway, grandpa broke it when he visited in the late 70's.

Seems like within the last 6 months or so somebody was on here trying to sell paracord hammonks. IIRC they were net style or woven or something. Would be worth a google
    Good luck,

Well Xtrekker you are right on spot with one style I'm looking into. That video was absolutely awesome, but his kids should be slapped for not wanting to carry on a tradition. I hope that I would even be able to take the time to do something like that. I wasn't planning on making my own string. Thanks for sharing the video.

I'm a bit of a fiber artist, I spin and knit and do some weaving occasionally. My weaving skills aren't anything to write home about, but its very satisfying. I just asked on a back-strap weaving message board for more information about weaving a hammock with a back-strap loom I probably won't get to weaving the hammock for a while. i have to do some practice projects first. I've actually never done any backstop weaving, so there will be a learning curve. On the plus side the tools you need for back-strap weaving are pretty inexpensive (compare to other kinds of weaving anyway)

If you want a solid hammock and not a mesh one I think a backstrap loom is the way to go. When I learn more and start my project I'll have to dust off my blog to document things.
