    Hammock Infidels

I cannot believe what I am hearing from my family. We have an upcoming overnight camping trip and the troops are revolting against hammocks.

My wife has never even slept in a hammock, so of course she is opposed to the concept.

My 20-year-old-son recently observed, after three nights in the Adirondacks sleeping in a hammock, that hammocks suck and they make his back hurt. His word is influential.

Of course, my 13-year-old son pitched in that he thought hammocks suck, they make his back hurt too.

What baffles me is that both sons could regularly sleep 10 hours in a hammock without stirring.

I suspect this is just a petty revolt against the paterfamilias. I have in no way imposed my hammock beliefs upon others - rather, I tried to share my passion for the gains in comfort.

If my family wants to go to ground, they won't have any support from me. Investigate ground-dwelling ways on your own.

Toss the family in the big nylon prison cell and you chill in your hammock. I'm still looking for a down side to this equation??

So in the morning the "old man" will be lounging in the hammock eating breakfast. Then the rest of the family comes crawling out of the tent popping handfuls of ibuprofen to nurse their achy backs.

I have no problem with people who prefer to sleep on the ground. More tree options for me.

It's the same conversation I have with Microsoft Windows users.

    Meh.

My apologies, but my sympathy is limited: your family is getting out there in the woods with you. Does it really matter how they choose to sleep?

Sure, I prefer an hammock. My wife doesn't. As long as she doesn't require me to sleep on the air mattress that hurts my back but she loves, I have no complaints about that.

I love going camping with her, even though she doesn't like backpacking. I'm outdoors with someone who I enjoy spending time with; that's what really matters, not how we got there or what gear she chooses to use.

If your family doesn't wind up liking hammocks, well, too bad for them. As long as they don't require you to sleep on the ground, why worry?

Yes, at least they are getting out there with you.....but I'd also let them deal with their own ground dwelling set ups, tear downs, and comfort level .

My wife's idea of camping is a Holiday Inn (as it is lower end than a Radison or the likes). If she said the only way she'd get out in the woods was to sleep on the ground in a tent, I'd carry 90 lbs out just to make sure she was comfortable (and coming from a gram weenie, that's something).

By the way, I was wondering if you caught my shout out in my last video?

Either way is a plus, keeps more campsite options for you if they sleep on the ground though. We tend to mix it up, although my boys are all about the hammock bunks. (7 and 9).
