As to site selection, it looks like that was the only place where trees were available. It also appears that the water came up rather quickly.

Careful, they might point out that the "ground dwellers" had better choices for their site selection, not being dependent on trees for their shelters.
Are they solid poles? I haven't seen any that would support the weight of a hammock.
I grew up in Tellico Plains. If I am not mistaken, that is a motorcycle campground on Mecca Pike...just a couple miles from the farmhouse I grew up in. I've seen flash flooding like that many times down there.......good memories

HA! Flash flooding = good memories.
When I was a kid flooding like sometimes brought fish from the creek up into the fields and we could practically fish from the back yard. Dad would usually take me hunting arrowheads in the fields after the waters receded and occasionally I would be able to play in that muddy water without getting my butt busted
