Tarp over or under ridgeline

RL under the tarp. Never got wet.

Old school lines allowed water to travel down the lines. New stuff like amsteel, zing-it and dynaglide are hydrophobic (doesnt absorb water) so they are less prone to having water travel down.

Ridgeline under the tarp for me. It just "seems" to add more support in case of snow or a heavy rain causing pooling in a tarp not strung tight enough. I also use the prussics around the CRL and tied to the tarp ridge tie-outs. It makes it super easy to place the tarp exactly where I want it.

That's my story and I'm stickin' to it!

I usually do over the top because its higher away from the hammock and if the weather turns really bad it holds better and is stronger that way. Some times I use s-biners and clip stuff on the continual RL under the tarp too so that's nice.

Started with line tied to the tarp ends and prussics, but thought a CRL above the tarp looked sexier. However, because I use paracord for the ridgeline I found stretch to be an issue. Moved the CRL beneath the tarp--less stretch, but as noted by OP, the tarp tended to rub a bit. Moved back to the line-tied-to-tarp-ends method.

If I ever use dynaglide I might give the CRL-above-the-tarp another go. It's a tyvek tarp, though--you love it for what it is rather than try to over-adorn it. Dynaglide with tyvek is like putting a walrus in a slinky red evening dress... it's still a gigantic sea mammal with a mustache, but now it just looks silly

That's pretty slick! I may have to experiment with that idea. I am assuming you can get the 8-10" drop without every re-tieing the CRL?

Yep, that's correct. The prussik loops let the tarp drop down for better coverage.

Mine runs under the tarp, but the actual Ridgeline is usually somewhat slack.

The one time I set up both hammock and tarp, I did it w/o a ridgeline, just for a few minutes to test it out and tied the tarp to both trees with a taut line hitch. It took practically no time and worked fine. I want to try to get the ridgeline tied and fine tuned, but I, too, am wondering where is the optimal place for the tarp.

I like mine over the hammock.

Set it so there's as much as possible overhanging each end evenly. Can easily move it around to adjust for wind direction if I need to.

The Prussik loops allow for infinetesimal amounts of adjustment for position and tension.

I run my ridge line under the tarp and have the loops connected to the tarp with soft shackles.

I just tie to the ends with a prusik and Dutch hook on the end,easy/quick to set up and adjust. Works great for me ..
