Chinook 12x9.5 vs. Kelty Noah 12; first tarp opinions

Does anyone have any experiences with both of these that they would like to share? I am in the market for a tarp and would like it big enough to close the doors during low temps. I know these are the lightest or best quality setups but I'm on a budget. Or if you think there is a better alternative...let me know.

    Chinook 12x9'6" $ 39 rectangle 28oz
    Kelty 12x12 $51 square 30oz

    Thanks

Depends on the types of weather you're planning on using this for/what your needs are.

    1. If this is a summer/3 season tarp or you are willing to give up some livable space for a weight savings, you could go with a smaller, lighter, silnylon tarp like a MacCat Micro, Warbonnet Edge, or Wilderness Logics Tadpole.

This option will give you less coverage but will be substantially lighter. It will run you $65-$85 depending on what model you choose.

    2. If this is a winter/inclement weather tarp or you are more concerned with having some livable space under the tarp, you can look at the two tarps you mention (and I will add in the Chinook 14x12).

This option will give you more coverage (and the Chinook 14x12 will give you true doors like a legitimate 4 season tarp).

This option is also heavier but is slightly cheaper.

If this is a winter/inclement weather tarp or you are more concerned with having some livable space under the tarp, I would recommend the Chinook 14x12.

I have a Kelty Noah 12, and I'm very happy with it. I haven't played around with "closing the doors" yet, but I plan to in a couple weeks when I go camping. It appears that it would work well (tie-outs in the proper places, etc). It comes with 4 figure 9's, 4 stakes, & 4 long cords.

Fyi, I bought mine from Austin Kayak.com & used this 15% off code (FB15) for a final price of $48.45 with free shipping.

I like my Noah 12, and it is great for covering two hammocks.

Thanks you for all the help guys. I had to make a quick decision as I'm leaving for a trip soon. Went with the Kelty Noah 12. Got for the $48.45 shipped price.

    Special thanks to rcracin24.

Bought two hammocks today too! I'm in neck deep now.

You'll like the Noah 12. It has a variety of pitching options and the weight isn't too bad.

Glad I could help! Someone shared that deal w/ me when I was looking to buy my tarp, & I thought I would pass it along. I think you'll be happy with it! It rained for about 2 hours (an hour of heavy rain & wind) last week when I was camping, & it kept me & my gear dry!

I admit that I wasn't all that thrilled to see more than one review somewhere that said it leaked badly but if you say it's good to go then all in.

I saw those reviews and was concerned as well, but several people on here said their's worked great. Also, someone said they thought the review about it leaking was actually for Kelty's sun shade thingy...

Ya, I saw the sun shade thing too, but then there was another leaky review.....dun dun dun.....

Like I said, I'm not too worried about it now. If others here have had positive experiences with it since, I'm good to go. I'd much rather believe the people here than an anonymous poster with unknown intentions on another site.

Of course, if it does leak when I get it, I'll be the first to let everyone know.
