Started out with straps and descenders, went to whoopies, going back to straps and descenders...for me less pieces to handle, store, carry or leave hanging on a tree. The strap is the tree hugger.

Whoopies are great. I have them on my DIY. Then the adjustable webbing on my WBBB. I like to have multiple options. I don't like all my gear the same.

Big fan of the whoopie sling here. Less bulk for me and I just like the way they work. Plus....I get to say "whoopie sling" a lot.

I love makin' whoopie slings and engineering new combinations of stuff from the same primary building blocks, but the straps work just as well and are pretty darned easy to adjust. I believe it really just comes down to "preference." I suggest you try 'em both. You might find you are naturally drawn to one over the other.

.... then again ....

You might be one of the rare few that loves both equally. And that's okay.

Some complain that whoopies take extra room and require trees to be farther alart. But this isn't so if you use a comtinuois loop of line on the hammock end. If trees are close, simply hang the loop on a Marlin spike in the strap. The whoopie will just dangle freely.

Aside from the idea of just being able to say "Whoopie" (which is fun to make, in case you missed that...), I have another reason to use them, which a few others have mentioned. When used with the right straps and a marlinspike hitch, they are the lightest possible suspension I have been able to come up with.

If anyone has come up with something lighter, please let me know. I will be doing some weight comparisons in a week or so, so I am ready to compare a few different systems.

Also, but combining a marlinspike on a strap (which can be placed at any place) and haning the whoopie loop on that, I have a system which may be the most flexible in length of spanning trees. My bury is very close to my locked brummel (which is on a small loop); this gives me the sortest possible whoopie length.

I will measure this when I set up and for documentation soon.

Dang it, I tried to fight it and not like them, but I'm going back to whoopies, ditching the descenders.....I thought the Internet was a fad too....

when i started this post, i had never tried whoopies and was on the fence whether to mess with them or not. but i ended up making some just for the fun of it and tried them out... and i love them. i like them much better then the straps.
the only thing is if that rope gets wet. they can be difficult to loosen.

Yes, there's much to be said for having several several small smooth toggles with you to slip into larks head knots when you make them. One #10 aluminum knitting needle cut into 4 pieces will burden you just 12 grams. They'll pull easily from the knots and make them easier to take apart.
