HB thanks! Not bravery, ignorance probably more. The guide we hired Sam was full of confidence and the coastal brown is focused mostly on salmon. The blond one, he knew i was in the bushes but was always look for a bigger bear that's probably kicked his arse in the past. If the death had occurred in Denali before we did the bear hike in Katmai we might have rethought things.
Denali bears get hungrier than Katmai bears without the free sushi bar, so everyone I know who is experienced with Katmai/Kodiak/Kenai coastal browns says they (the Katmai bears) are much more accommodating to humans. Too busy fishing.
Doesn't mean I'd go hug one, but eases my mind a bit when I am in AK.
That said, I *have* been kissed on the cheek by a grizzly and it's a sticky mess. But it was pretty awesome just the same. And I was confident I wasn't on the menu!
