I use both the Winter Wren and Exped Dreamwalker as a pod system and have had good luck with both.
    Easy in, easy out.
Top quilt, under quilt in one.
Can move around in the hammock and not feel all bound up.
Also can layer the systems to go down to -0 weather.

how do they compare to the wiggy's mil. bag mod.?
i guess the cost is a little more, carry weight is a little less, what about room to move around?

As mentioned a center zip is best, I have a
Outbound Cartier Deluxe Barrel Sleeping Bag, 5 lb

I like the bag because when in it and it is a little warm
I can unzip it and there is not much on either side of me
and I can leave it unzipped but lay it over me and that is a nice option.
The foot opens up and has netting for ventilation.

This is my go to bag for spring and fall.
PS. it has a built in pillow . . . but it is only enough to cushion the hardness of the hammock bed, as it is under tension

      • Sleeping bag has a temperature rating of: -5° C (cold)
      • Barrel shape 33 x 75" (84 x 191 cm) fits people up to 5' 11"
      • Synthetic Quadratherm™ insulation
      • Comfortable poly/cotton lining
      • Centre and foot box zippers improve ventilation

I prefer a sleeping bag over a TQ because of the price. Yes it it s bit heavier and a bit larger packed up. But is 25-50 % of the cost. You can either sleep in it like normal, even though most of the insulation you lay on is useless it still works as a wind break under you and keeps it on. Or you can leave it un zipped and use it as a top quilt. I prefer the mummy style as well because, well idk lol.

+1 on Big Agnes bags. They have no bottom insulation so they work like a top quilt. And the pad sleeve keeps you from slipping off your pad.

Exactly why I'll always use my Marmot bags instead of a quilt, personally.

I use a North Face Cat's Meow, and have really enjoyed it. The zipper stops at the footbox, so it is easy to leave it completely unzipped and use it as a top quilt. I really need the bottom insulation, so I made a 1/2 underquilt from an old sleeping bag and simply break open the Cat's Meow sometime during the night when I get chilly. But, with the fulltime footbox it is really easy to use in the middle of the night.

The local military surplus store has the green portion of the 3-part Army sleeping system for $25 each. The tag at the foot end says it's rated to 30 degrees (with insulating underwear). They weigh just under 2lbs and have a centerline zipper that stops just below the knee. At $25, I bought three to play with. I use one unzippered like a top quilt with a really big footbox.

At that temp I would use the bag like a top quilt and have a pad or uq unless you have a good synthetic

Oh sure, in that configuration, I use insulation underneath the hammock. I thought we were just talking about sleeping bags.
