What are your favorite places to hang in the Florida Panhandle?

I'd love to put together a collection of hiking and hanging places not only for my own benefit, but for anyone else looking for somewhere new to explore.

If all you have is a location, that's great, but if you have a trip report to share, I'll gladly edit this first post, and add that to the location that's listed.

Special recreational land use permits are required to be on Eglin property, as well as an additional permit for camping. Details for both are available by calling Jackson Guard at 850 882 4165. Also note that sections of the reservation are subject to closure for training purposes. Be sure to check prior to your visit for any up to date closures.

Websites and threads that might be useful to help people find places to hang.

A forum member, samsara, created a website for Florida Hammockers.

There's a Florida Hangers Facebook page.

There's also a Hammock Camping Facebook page.

There's a "Favorite places to hang in Florida" thread. Not specific to the panhandle but some suggestions might end up there that could be shared here.

I've been to the Fort Braden section 1 primative campsites...although I was in a tent, there are many places to hang there right on the water. I would def. go back

Engine, I'm always looking for new places to check out. This might be advancing higher on my list. Especially if I could get someone to go along with me.

Looks like you have already hit my favorites.

    Blackwater, Alaqua FT, Torreya....

I also hang often at the local scout camp (west of DeFuniak). Often if I am looking at alternative locations (read mountains), I will head to Alabama or Georgia. Just across the state line, north of Crestview is Conecuh National Forest. I have hiked the trails there, but I have not yet hung in the area. I hope to do so sometime in the near future.

Skipper, I need to get some mountain time in too.

I'm hoping to be able to gather a pretty good database of Panhandle hiking spots to give folks in this area a little more variety in their hanging.

I'm not sure about including Conecuh... I know, it's right over the border, but the title is "in the Florida Panhandle"... Details, details, what to do?

I know the scout camp you're talking about. I don't think it's open to the public though.

I'm looking for places that allow overnight camping, hammock friendly, and I'd prefer places like Blackwater which don't mind where you camp within their boundaries, over ones that insist you only hang your bed in the designated areas.

I agree that Blackwater has the best options. For a group hang, it would probably be best to utilize a location accessible by car, as not all local hammockers are backpackers. It would also be good to have a site near a river or stream, as none of the sites outside of the RV camps have potable water.

The problem with the Blackwater recognized front country sites (not RV), is that there are no reservations; all first come, first served. I do recall hearing about a site on the Blackwater River on one of the bluffs. Another possibility is the Red Rock campsite. I will speak to my friend when I can about these sites and try to get some ideas.

One of my favorite spots to hang is on the north side of Bear Lake in Blackwater SF. It is a primitive only site so no campers, etc. Also you can hang anywhere with no worries and have never seen a ranger when hanging there.
