Eastern Great Lakes Hang - Sept 28-30, 2012 - Autumn Paddle in Algonquin

After talking to Tracey, I am in. She wont be coming tho. I am fine with the long portage as well.

I think I am in. During September I am technically homeless so I'd be glad to get out and sleep in a hammock vs the futon I'll be sleeping in.

I don't have a canoe so if someone has space in theirs for an extra then that would be really helpful. I have been working out all year just for this trip!

I just have to make sure my gear is accessible in the storage locker I'm renting.

The portage to Louisa is long, but not difficult, with a couple moderate hills.

I was on Ragged last year on the third week of Sept. and had some quite decent bass fishing.....just sayin

Hey i just did that portage on Thursday. It's really not that bad, apart from the never-ending nature of it. A few small slopes (can't really say hills) but mostly rolling and flat. It was dry and well-maintained.

The campsites at the east end of Louisa were all closed due to bear issues. I don't know how long that will continue. End of September with the earlier sunsets, figure 45 min from Rock access point to portage, 2 and a half hours for a double carry, if people are arriving late afternoon at the access point, and then can't stay in East Louisa, it might be dark by the time they get to a decent site. Something to consider...

Following up on Sturgeon's trip report, I gave the Park a shout and asked about Louisa. The ranger who answered sounded a little surprised and said he hadn't heard of any closures, but would definitely look into it and call me back. True to his word, a few minutes later he rang to say that as far as he could find out, the sites on the east end of Louisa were open. He explained how normally park officials were notified by radio of any closures, especially those for bear problems, and they hadn't heard about Louisa.

I don't know what to say. If Sturgeon says they were closed, then closed they are or were when he passed through... We can always call back closer to our departure date, but we may want to also consider an alternate route to the Ragged/Louisa choices, maybe Hambone>RalphBice>Little Trout, that I've done before and recommend. A little longer drive to access but still very lovely with reasonable trout fishing.

Paddling wise.. sounds reasonable and a buddy would be fun... I'm just hoping to get a chance at some decent fishing. Back on our first EGL CanoeHang in Spring 2011, a couple of us were trolling Tom Thomson for several hours without getting a single bite. No good.

Tracey wise.. that's fantastic!!! I'm sure she'll have a great time on a solo hike!!!!
