How much down is enough?

I have been looking around and see some quilts using the 850+ down for UQ anywhere from 10 to 14oz but how much is needed to get to 30*? Does having fewer baffles lessen its warmth even if the total number of ounces remains the same? Is there a general rule as to baffle size? How much over stuffing is needed if any and whats the benefit to over stuffing rather than just making the UQ large enough for the amount of down being used?

You need 2" of average thickness for 30*

so, mulityply the 2" times the length and times the width of your quilt. Then divide that answer by 850. That's how many ounces you will need. Make the baffles about 1-1/4" high.

Make the spacing between baffles 4-1/2" to control the shifting down.

There are all also TQ/UQ spreadsheets that will do the math for you & help with baffle placement. Mad777 has done one for UQ's for gathered end hammocks & I've done one for bridge hammocks & TQs. See signature. There are others our there also.
