    DIY Tarp??

I really wanted to make a hammock, but due to time and money i bought a 40 dollar hammock. I thought it would be worth it because it came with a two year warranty. I now need a tarp. I really do not want to buy one for more than i paid for the hammock. I want to know of any cheap tarps (around $30), or any cheap fabric to make one. I need to know the type of fabric.

I was thinking about buying (or making) a simple 8x10 to 10x12 tarp. This would offer Optimal rain coverage. It could also be made into a ground tent. Thanks

where would you get silnylon. He mentions Ed Speer. His site directs me to tree to tree, and I can't find fabric there. The cheapest i have found nylon is DIY Gear Supply seconds ($5.20) Can i get it any cheaper

It just does not come at too inexpensive a price. That is a good deal.

If you want to make one, use silnylon (silicone impregnated nylon). Unless you are rough with your gear, use 1.1 oz/sy fabric, which has a finished weight of about 1.4 oz/sy with the silicone. Buy the "seconds" and don't worry about leaks. Actually, "seconds" usually have more silicone than "1st".

Get a tube of pure silicone and mix with 4 parts mineral spirits to seam seal it. Set it up under tension before you seal it and keep it up all day.

The material is about 60" wide. You will need about 6 yards for a hex tarp and 7-8 yards for a rectangular type tarp. The material costs about $6 per yard plus ~$5 shipping.

Cheap waterproof fabric can be found at DIY Gear Supply, along with all of the other stuff you'd need to build a tarp.

Your cheapest option is going to be the "70d Coated Ripstop 2nds"; it's $2.95 a yard right now. However, it's going to be roughly double the weight of one made out of the "Silnylon 2nds", if that matters.

    Hope it helps!

If weight and pride don't matter get a 10x12 blue poly tarp at Wally World. Get two in case one tears.

That's what I will use until I can afford my dream DIY cuben.

It's always $$ vs everything else.

I've made great tarps from the 70D from diygearsupply as mentioned, but know plenty of folks that do fine with the good old blue poly tarp from Wallyworld.

Try a cheapo if that's what the budget allows. Just keep in mind it can be better. And you can always use a cheap tarp down the road, so no loss...

    If money is tight.....

Here's the next tarp that shows up in a search here, one without a ridge line.

Of course 4 yards of fabric in a parallelogram design will not give the coverage of 8 yards of fabric.

If weight isn't an issue you could do something like this: http://www.hammockforums.net/forum/s...ght=tarp+cheap

    or,

Maybe use a piece of tyvek scrounged from a construction site or purchased from on of the big-box DIY stores.

The poly tarp works great and is going strong in its 2nd year. I made up a tyvek tarp recently. Like the material but i'm still trying to find corner tie-out tabs I'm satisfied with. Found some on ebay that I ordered and will try out next weekend.
