Gütermann is a preferred thread around here, so you should be fine.

I use a soldering iron. I used to use an hot wire cutter (the kind you use for cutting craft foam), but it crapped out on me. Both work very well for sealing the edges at the same time you cut.

I do recommend using a straightedge (not a plastic one!) to ensure that your cuts are straight when they need to be. A Fiskars wooden ruler with the small metal edge on the inches side is what I use, and it works great!

Also, don't do this on top of anything you care about getting scarred from the heat. Don't ask how I know that one......

Guttermann's is the preferred thread hereabouts. Depending on where you're getting your material from, they should carry it. If not, DIY Gear Supply (Backwoods Daydreamer) sells it. I recommend the "Mara" thread for most projects, while the "Tera" thread works pretty well for high-strength applications (backpack strap connections, etc.).

    Hope it helps!

I use a Weller butane soldering iron with a hot knife tip (They are a little pricey but mine was given to me) It heats up very fast and makes a very clean cut and seals the edge. Also I do not have to deal with a cord.

Another soldering iron fan here (thanks MadWolf). Also, I use a glass cutting board to do my cutting on. The nylon leaves a black mark that wipes right off. Wife just about killed me until she saw it wash off.

I may seem like a no brainer to some of us... but it is really helpful for us DIY guys to have our own tools and such. It's not so much a case of no longer having to share... although that is a good thing. It means our families do not have to take the brunt of our hobbies.

For the benefit of peace in the home.... get your own cutting boards and other tools. Don't use the family scissors and shears. You want control of those. No construction paper collages with the fabric shears.... ever.... period... But after all, the kids have school projects to do.

I bought a door for $5 and stuck it on some saw horses. Instant cutting table. Just make sure it is at least 32" wide so you can spread out a 60" fabric folded in half. Every so often the wife eyes it longingly until I remind her she can clear off her own cutting table.
I may be slow... But I sure am gimpy.
