Which system is best for me?

    Hello all!

I've been a lurker for some time now, but only just created an account.
I wish to get the sleep system that will be best for SHTF(when the sh hits the fan), or as an emergency BUG OUT BACKPACKING system. Basically, this should be quick to setup and even quicker to take down. I should be able to jump out of it at a moment's notice... and most importantly it should be DURABLE for long years of incredibly hard use. I have put together a few options below, with only price and weight considered. If you have any other suggestions, or improvements, or could advise which one would be best for me, i would GREATLY appreciate it!

P.s. im in georgia, so summers get really hot and winters get really cold. im 5'11 220 lbs and weight is important to me, but not the end all be all.

It's hard to say what's best for "YOU". I thought I knew what was best for me until I went to a couple of group hangs and started seeing what others were using. Now, I have no idea what's best for me, but I'm always trying something a little different until I find it.

With the systems you mentioned, the HH seems to be the best weight to price, and they are great hammocks. The WW is very nice, but 1/2 pound for $350 is hard for me to justify.

That being said, I'd think the best thing to do is hook up with some local outdoor folks and check out these systems and see what you like.

Pitch and strike quickly by using carabiners. CAMP makes Ti ones that are light as a feather.

Take a look at Clark hammock systems.

Or for $750 you could start with a cuben tarp and build under it with many of the fine cottage offerings on this site -- all American made and you know where they live! LOL

I agree with the go-bag concept and am working on that myself. I teach a lesson on Christian preparedness (Luke 22:36) and would speak at a hang if invited.

The Warbonnet Blackbird double layer is an excellent choice! Rugged, comfy, simple and great for using a pad. You may want to consider a diamond tarp for fast deployment or take down. A properly pitched Superfly uses 4-12 stakes. A diamond fly only 2 stakes. Of course have the Superfly too, for when the weather is foul.

If you are looking at tents, I love my l Lunar Solo at 23 oz. it is near impossible to beat from a lightweight small packing tent.

Hammocks like the Warbonnet blackbird are quick and simple.

Lots to choose from. I'd find a local hang and see if you could try out a few.

The speed ofsetup and take down basically lies on the method you choose to hang the hammock.

I think you have some time so don't rush your decision, the election is still a couple months away. Seriously, it's easy to drop $500 on something you may not be happy with in the long run.

Your comparisons are not very equal. A HH supershelter is nothing like winter Warbonnet down quilts.

IMO the best Bug out hammock would be the HH Deep Jungle Asym Zip XL with quilts from any of our cottage vendors to match the temps you plan to hang in.

    good luck and hth

Looking at your list I did wonder what your plans are. You have crazy warm sleeping bags and very heavy tents.

I find that if you want to be comfortable you need 2-3 bags, because if you take a -20 bag on temp above 20 degrees you'll roast.

You can get by with one shelter, but unless you are really going to be camping in the winter (most people don't) I would get a light 3 season tent or about any of the hammocks.

I'd recommend being realistic about your goals and intended use, not to mention your ability to carry all the weight you listed. I don't know anyone that has just one setup.

I see you are from Atlanta, come check out the SC Fall Sprawl this weekend. There will be plenty of hammock and tarps and insulation for you to check out. Then you can make a more informed decision on what you may want. Plus, you'll have lots of fun at the hang with some wonderful HF folks.
If you don't have a tent or hammock at this time and want to attend, pm me and let me know, I can lend you a hammock system for the weekend.
