I just came buy this today. Thought it was cool.

This is using paracord, but I am sure it will work with any type of cord.

Years ago, I made a hammock using paracord and the fishing net knot. It came out great! So great that I was able to put my box spring and matress in it and hang it from the rafters in the place I was living. (they were handhewn rafters). I swear I could have used the thing to sling a car! (well, maybe a small car) I came up with the idea of putting the mattress in it because the knots were really uncomfortable.

If you're going to use paracord, I would suggest skipping the knots and try the loose-weave style, like they have in South America.

A net style hammock is no more complicated than one knot repeated many times. There are a lot of different ways to do this. What I have found would be interesting and what the op means is weaving a Mayan hammock. There are instructions on how to weave; however, there is a company that you can buy one for probably cheaper than you can get the materials to make one yourself.

If you end up weaving one yourself after seeing those prices, just look at ehow.com...there are directions on there.

The women who answered me about weaving hammocks says the one she has was woven on a vertical loom. Which seems simple enough to use. For what the yarn would cost, yes, you could probably just buy one. I'm trying to figure out what yarns to use, then I need to figure out how to finish the ends. I think either a cotton rugwarp, or a mercerized cotton would be strong enough.

I made a hammock from those directions some time ago. The directions are good. The diamond mesh of a Mayan gives a different "lay" of hammock than a cross-woven one. It's not hard to set up and do the weaving, whether you do a Mayan mesh or a cross-weave, but either way takes a lot of time and cord. It's easier to set up a Mayan (just 2 posts in the ground) than a vertical loom for cross-weaving. I made my Mayan-style hammock considerably wider than the instructions (i.e., more wraps around the posts), and the cord I used was a big cone of cotton carpet warp. Highly satisfactory! Durable with reasonable care, cool in summer, quite comfortable. If I wanted a synthetic one, I'd probably use something like #18 mason cord or smaller. I wouldn't use paracord, it would come out heavy and stiffer/coarser than a "real" Mayan, and paracord stretches quite a lot. A thinner cord is better. You want a close-spaced weave for comfort, otherwise you'll end up wanting a pad to protect against waffle-skin. That said, I agree that unless you really prefer to DIY and have the cord already, it would be less costly to just buy a good Mayan. I wouldn't enjoy a KNOTTED net hammock in any case. Those hard little knots can't be comfortable to lie on. If you do weave your hammock, I wish you great success! I'm traveling and seldom on internet for a while, but I'll check back now and then to see if you've posted your progress and results, or if I can help in any way. Good luck with it!
