    questions....Underquilt out of sleeping bag?

ok.....I'm sure this is an old question....but could you use a 0 degree sleeping bad (NOT DOWN)cut up as a under quilt???.....get it and cut it to size for you.....sew some channels in it for shock cord.....

    do-able???

or will it just not hold the heat or keep you warm?

Absolutely doable. My first UQ little over 2 yrs ago was a Kids 72" synthetic Eureka Sleeping bag cut the zipper off,,and hood, sewed where I cut it, added parachord as I had no shock chord,,and tied it right on to a Skeeter Beater Pro,,that 30 degree bag,,weighed about 3 pounds and was warm in the mid 30's with a Big Agnes Down 20 degree bag over me..it was my first set up and was toasty,,,but heavy,,.both Top Bag and Bottom Quilt,,cracked way over 6pounds not counting the hammock. As long as you sinch it up tight enough and get it around the hammock to not leak any heat,,,your bag will keep you toast. I even made a TO out of a sleeping bag,,cutting zipper off,,sewing a foot box enclosed by hand with needle and thread,,and is super warm. Lots of hammockers make their own stuff out of sleeping bags by improvising to fit their needs.

Heck yeah man cut that bag up. Whatever it takes to get you into the piney woods, do it and take care of that CBS.
Hammocking, car camping, backpacking, kayaking, and mountain biking. Getting in touch with nature is getting expensive. Good thing I can DIY!

When I first got the bug I tried to DIY a uq like that. It's possible but understand that you need stronger thicker shock cord and you still need to mall that bag to scrunch around your head and legs or you will suffer from CBS. You should scrutinize t he for sale stuff and get yourself a down uq. People are selling used quilts at decent prices on here. You really will not regret it. I learned this lesson months after moronic attempts at quilts that we're just lame compared to this cottage stuff. If you were just a ultr light camper that saw hammocks one day you didn't know what ultralight sleep systems were or could do till you got here.
