Tarp rip-stop, what to look for?

I am looking to make a tarp and am thinking of using ripstop. What weights should I consider and anything else to look at?
I am looking at a 1.9oz coated fabric currently, but am not sure if it will do.
Weight is not as critical as staying dry, but cost is a factor.

I would recommend you just by some 30D Silnylon 2nds from either DIY Gear supply or OWF. Doing this will simplify everything and leave you with a trusted product to keep you dry.

That is the same site I am looking at. Their site is a bit odd.

the goal is not to find out on he trail that water can get through. The heavy poly tarp I used two weekends ago gave us a great hiding spot from the downpour we spent the night in.

DWR is just a water repellent coating that has leaked in some of my previous projects.. Calendered material is typically used in Goose Down insulated items like Quilts. It lessens the amount of down that escapes compared to normal nylon fabrics...It will not stop water from passing through.

I HIGHLY recommend you consider using silnylon for tarp material vs DWR Coated Calendered fabric.

You definitely want silnylon or urethane coated fabric. Not DWR.

I didn't see anything on that site that I would use for a tarp.

Why would you not use the 1.1 30D SilNylon? Pretty much every good tarp out there is made from this material.

Didn't see any silnylon listed anywhere. Got a link from magnafabrics.com?

Call Noah Lamport. They have sil nylon 2nds for $3/yrd. Minimum 10 yrd order, but you'll still pay less than anywhere else. Ask them to ship it "off the roll".

They don't list it on their web site. You have to call. Color selection may be limited.
