Just something to consider -the hammock you tried is somewhat on the small side, and likely has a very small "sweet spot" due to that fact. Something more flexible, like a simple gathered end hammock with a separate bug net, might be more suited for your style.

My first night in my Blackbird, I was somewhat disappointed and not at all sure it would work for me. A few more nights of tweaking and I absolutely refused to sleep on the ground.

Sorry you had a rough night, I had exactly the same experience at first. I was a side sleeper, restless all night, couldn't sleep on my back. I set up indoors, and started napping in it during the day, then slept in the hammock part of the night and the bed the rest. It took about a week until one night I slept in the hammock all night, on my back, and got up feeling great. I have now slept in the hammock every night for about a year, and can't imagine going back to a bed or sleeping on the ground. There is a learning curve, so you might consider a simple gathered end hammock and experiment around home before you give up completely. Worked for me!

Well you tried to like it. If everyone liked hammocks the prices would raise on all the gadgets and related gear, the waiting lists would get longer and all the primo hang spots woul always be taken. I'm kinda glad in a strange way that it isn't for everyone
I like refried beans. That's why I wanna try fried beans, because maybe they're just as good and we're just wasting time. You don't have to fry them again after all.

There are many types of hammocks available. I have found that the bridge hammocks are sometimes the answer for folks who usually sleep well on the ground. It gives you a bit more room to spread out and move, and is more like sleeping on a cot than all wrapped up in a hammock.

In any case, best regards and good luck!
+1 on what NCPatrick said. Give a bridge hammock a try and it could change your outcome..

Nah! You won't like that either. The ground is your friend.

I also toss and turn all night when in my bed or on the ground. I can't sleep on my back. But in my hammock, I am comfortable on my back and sleep well. I sleep better and more comfortable in my hammock then on the ground.

Sorry it didn't work for you.

I have a longer trip coming up in a couple weeks. I took a short one this past weekend to make sure my gear was in order, and to get the initial hang in the HH. Very glad I did. At the very least it seems this particular model of hammock is not for me.

So dumb question. Not sure what a bridge hammock is? Someone point me in a direction on a decent quality bridge hammock, so I can do some reading.

A bridge has spreader bar at each end thus making it flater. Jacks Are better and the just released Warbonnet are two bridge hammocks that are spoken highly of

There are three different commercially-sold models out there right now that I'm aware of. The first and second are sold by Jacks'R'Better as the Bear Mountain Bridge Deluxe and Ultralight models. The third (just introduced a few weeks back) is the Warbonnet Ridgerunner hammock.

There is also a great series of threads by GrizzlyAdams on making your own located here, here, here, and here.

    Hope it helps!
