I LOVE LOVE LOVE THIS IDEA! I've wanted to hang out in aspens ever since I hiked through a beautiful grove of them in the Buffalo Peaks wilderness and was kicking myself for stopping a few miles earlier to camp in some pines. Not that I don't like the pines, but aspens are synonymous with the mountains to me.

Does anyone know of any campsites - formal campgrounds or easy short hike-ins, that are filled with aspens?

So, I think he is looking to do this thing sooner than later. For the best weather, we should probably get it done before the middle of next month.
I'd definitely like to get out there soonish, but I recently declined the job offer in Boston, so I'm back on the market again with no huge rush to move. I'm thinking I will be able to squeeze in a full winter in the Rockies before I am homeward bound.

Pleasepleasepleasepleaseplease.....DO NOT do this between the 10th and the 23rd of October! I have to travel to Chicago over those dates and would have to miss this. Boothill and I have been talking about making some of the other Hangs, and Denver-ish is an easy 5-6 hour drive for us. The end of this month/first weekend of October would be perfect for us! September 29 is a full moon.

Kenosha Pass has huge Aspen groves on the east side.

Looking at pictures online, Kenosha pass looks great - reserveamerica is claiming that it's closed until next year, any idea who would be the best people to call to get the skinny on the status of the campground?

Just got off the phone with the South Platte Ranger District. She started by telling me that the campground is still open, but may close next Monday, or the Monday following that. She then said, "Kenosha East is open year-round".

Kenosha East is first come, first served, and not a ton of sites - I wonder how quickly it fills up at this time of year.

Kyle - these are usually Fri-Sun, with several folks only staying for Sat-Sun. We hammockers are pretty laid back about silly things like deadlines and formal schedules.

I don't know what kinds of sites you all like to do this sort of thing at, but my wife and I stayed at Long Draw campground up the 14 and we were the only ones there a few weeks ago. Drive right up to the sites, which may be nice for packing a ton of gear in. 's about my only suggestion, lol... I've only camped once in CO since living here. *gasp* We do most of our camping on the road, like we did a month-long camping road trip all over California a couple summers back. Great fun.

But anyway, Long Draw is like 11 miles off the 14, over a dirt road. Pretty "remote" as far as established grounds go. Beautiful location too. This was nearby:

EDIT: Oh yeah, but it was like $20/night... >.<
