Video: 9/5-9 Laurel Highlands Hiking Trail (LHHT)

I’ve been trying to hike the Laurel Highlands Hiking Trail for two years. When the guy who wrote a book about it posted a trip on the Facebook page “for the LHHT” I thought looks like a great way to hike the trail and get to learn a lot about it in the process. We had a great trip and ended up meeting up with another south bounder on the first day (five miles into the trip) who ended up changing his plans (three days) and hiked out the rest of the trip with us. We had a great trip together and the trail was fantastic ……..even in the rain.

Wonderful video, enjoyed it very much.

I just found out about this trail a few months ago, and have been thinking about hiking it next year, got any tips?

    Hey, thanks for the post!

I looked at this hike a few years ago. There was talk of a footbridge being out and a very long detour? Did you know anything about that? How was water on the trail? How many days did it take you? Any advice you'd give to someone doing it in the future? Did you resupply any where?

Did you guys have to pay for camping at each spot??

As far as tips go ……I used Danes website http://www.shol.com/featheredprop/ when I first started to look into hiking the trail. Then about 6 months ago he posted this link to Facebook http://www.facebook.com/#!/groups/110628778976322/ Danes site is great for planning the trip then the FB page is great for current conditions and who’s trying to get a trip together.
P.S. I thought Dane “Sherpa” did a great job with the video as well

The bridge has been rebuilt over the turnpike. In the video you see me walk up to it. Water on the northern half of the trail is hard to come by. We did our thru hike SOBO, and I only had one liter of water for the climb up out of Seward. From the Rt 56 (Decker Ave) shelter to the Rt 271 there were no water sources. So with the high temps I loaded up with 3 liters of water to cover the eight miles. Water sources in the next section between Rt 271 & 30 were scarce as well but with the recent rains (thanks Isaac) we were able to filter water as necessary. The trip took us five days; we started at 9:30am on Wednesday morning and were off the trail eating cheese steaks in the Fall’s Market by 5:30pm on Sunday. As far as advice I would go to the Facebook page and watch for current conditions as well as make friends with Larry Dill, he offers to shuttle hikers for very reasonable fees. Twice he was set up to shuttle me but my plans changed at the last minute. I didn’t resupply anywhere. My food bag with my homemade alcohol stove kit and cup was the heaviest thing in my pack it weighed 112 ounces. I figured less the cook kit it was around 1.3 pounds of food per day and around 2500 calories. At the end of our second day we stayed at the Rt 30 shelter and hiked about 200yds north on 30 to Walat’s bar where I got a cheese burger and onion rings that were so huge I couldn’t finish it. I’m a carpenter and measure things for a living this burger was over 1.25 inches thick and at least 5 inches in diameter. They practically wheeled it out on a dolly. I had to waddle myself back to my hammock. And yes there is a small fee for the sites and you are supposed to camp at the shelter areas. It is $4.00 a night for Pa residents and I think $6.00 for out of state. We did see park rangers at the shelter areas Friday and Saturday nights checking on reservations.
Here is a link from the park webpage I thought it would be helpful as well.

Great info Gris! AND thank the hiking gods that footbridge is back up! I read where that was a 10 or so mile detour to get over the turnpike without the bridge!

Was it easy finding the trail when you were crossing the 7Springs ski slope? (like I said, I had looked into this a few years back and am now remembering questions I had. )
