    DIY 20 degree F UQ pattern/plan

Xtrekker got me thinking and motivated and I decided to post my plan here for peer review. Let me know what you think. Final dimensions are 46.8" x 78" planned with a modified version of CatSplat's calculator (added seam allowance and dual differential) .

1.75 baffle height, 2.25 chamber height, 1.25oz of 850 FP down per chamber. I also plan to add small 2" diameter draft tubes. End channel is integrated into the liner/shell fabric seam allowance. Side channel will be added on if needed.

    1) You are SOOO an engineer...nice drafting though ;
    Haha..couldnt resist.
It looks good and I think I am getting a better idea of what you were talking about..This will be alot of fun discussing the different options and the variations between our two quilts. I am using 18oz of down in my quilt. Might save 1oz for the draft tubes. How much down were you planning to use for yours? Looks like around 12oz from your sketch...

I blame you and your fancy drawings. ;-) I am a mechanical engineer though, and love geeking out about hammock stuff.

The body will have 11.25 oz with another .25oz expected for the draft tubes. In the uq calculator this is a 22% overfill, iirc. I'm expecting it to be closer to 30% due to the volume reduction from the darts, but I didn't bother calculating it.

I originally budgeted 13.5 oz for this quilt, but made some design changes that reduced it. If it looks light I have some extra to play with. 2" loft should get me to 20F per the Jardine formula.

The one aspect I am questioning is my dart dimensions. I may reduce from 2" width to 1.5". I think the length is ok.

Edit: Ok, I couldn't resist this morning and estimated the volume reduction - it's more like a 40% overfill...which I think is similar to a cottage manufacturer adding an oz of overstuff. Might not be a bad thing as I'm a cold sleeper.

Darts are the new style man...Its all about the style.....
Kidding aside, the darts reduce the length of the fabric shell so it will end up being the same size of the liner when sewn together. The outer shell is essentially larger in dimensions than the inner shell.

The darts plus the pleats in the shell do that. They also shape the quilt into a "bath tub" shape, so it conforms to the bottom of the hammock better.

I did just realize I need to adjust my dart sizes from the liner vs the shell, to account for the baffle differential. I'm going to reduce it Liner to 1.5", and adjust the Shell dart to 2.25". Pictures updated in first post.

I'm also thinking I don't need the big long darts in the Shell, only the liner. I just need pleats in the shell to take up the fabric difference. Otherwise the dart in the shell will affect the baffle differential negatively.

    Re: DIY 20 degree F UQ pattern/plan

Ya know, I wanted to tackle a diy uq with baffles, but my mind has just been blown. I am going to need to study this thread, scratch my head, and think some more.

    Thanks guys, lol.

I think that will not be good - either visually or practically -
the border will puff up - too much fabric here in the Shell.

Look here - you know it - looks pretty good, right?

    Sorry for my bad english.

I meant to ask you about those side-corner pleats on the outer shell. I understand the reason for the side pleats but what about the baffles? Won't you need to pleat them over the baffles also? And if so, then doesn't that negate the purpose?

I'm not sure I understand your question.

I've got to admit, I keep psyching myself out over the "shaped liner" part of this quilt. I may just end up doing a differential cut rectangle and call it a day lol.
