Can anyone recommend an overnight around Delaware Water Gap?

Looking for a hike this weekend, five to 10 miles in, five to 10 miles out. The guy I'm hiking with prefers five mile hikes, but I'm looking for a little more burn.

It's really hard to Google info on the NJ section of the AT - they want money for a trail guide. I don't have that problem with CT, PA, MD and other states.

I was just there last weekend, fishing and floating down the river. From the AT if you hike west (see the park map and google aerials) to the river, there are campsites on both banks, but more of them on the east bank where you will be. They are first-come sites, numbered with fire pits and occasional outhouses.

    Here is the official blurb:

"Primitive camping sites on the river are available ONLY to boaters and canoeists travelling from one access point to another when the distance is too great to be covered in one day.

Campsites are limited to a one-night stay, and are on a first-come, first-served basis. Canoe campsites are open all year unless the river is closed due to an emergency. At present there are no fees and no reservation system."

Here is the map of the campsites with GPS coords.

At this time of the year, you will likely have no one anywhere near you. Although the above clearly limits the sites to boaters, the vast majority of the sites will be empty, as we saw last weekend. We had the river almost to ourselves. I'm sure no one will much care if you occupy a site near dusk, as most boaters arrive in mid-afternoon.

My brothers and I usually favor campsites 91 and 92, near the power lines, as these have mostly flat ground, easy access to the river, and a loo.

Kittatinny is really nice, and Stokes state forest. But it has been awhile since I have been their and can't remember trail names and such. But what a beautiful part of our state

Going back through the NPS website, there is a bulletin with lots of info for hikers on the AT. Here is the blurb:

    • Camping is restricted to through-hikers who are hiking for two or more consecutive days.
    • Camping is limited to one night per campsite.
    • Camping is limited to ten persons per campsite.
    • Self-contained stoves are permitted; ground fires, charcoal stoves and grills are prohibited.

Here is the bulletin in PDF.

Well, looks like we're going NOBO on the AT from Dunnfield parking area, past Sunfish Pond, then up Raccoon Ridge/Mt. Mohican. We'll find a spot to camp up there.

My friend KYBob was still advocating a 4-mile hike an hour ago, but this looks to be 6 or 7 miles with good elevation - a compromise was reached. We're departing Dunnfield about 2:30 pm tomorrow.

Wish me luck! I've only seen the Delaware Water Gap from the car, but it looks like a truly beautiful place, and I'm somewhat embarrassed to say that I've lived in NJ for 23 years and have never been there. Shame on me.

I did this section on the AT with my friend who was thru hiking from the same parking lot up to NY. After Sunfish it becomes Ridge Walking. Hope you have a good time, Sun Fish Pond is a great spot to hang.

I'm gonna try to get a little higher elevation than Sunfish Pond. I wanna feel a cool breeze at night! The overnight low at Sunfish Pond is supposed to 45, so a little higher up the mountain might get me into the thirties.

If the cold weather won't come to me, I'll go to it.

Uploading some photos to post here for you of the section you are doing.

Just saw this thread, you are likely getting ready to depart now.

Will have them up in about 10 minutes if you see this and are interested.

Either way, have a good hike.
