    Question Tarp materials.

I was thinking about using Tyvek for a tarp. It is cheap, strong, reasonably light, and water resistant enough to get me out of the rain. The most common is silnylon, i'm just looking for alternatives. Tyvek seems to be alot easier to work with. Has anyone use synthetic roof underlayment for tarps.

Use some gorilla tape to make loops around the edges and let us know how it works.

I've modded several blue wallyworld tarps over the past year or so. Very sturdy and waterproof but also pretty heavy and they definitely don't roll or fold down small. Great for car camping, not so much for backpacking.

I'm playing with tyvek now. Tough stuff and waterproof. So far tie-out attachments made with various tapes haven't worked out so well. I just picked up some off of fleabay that are supposed to be 'permanent' once attached. I stuck 'em on the tarp this past weekend but haven't had a chance to string it up or sleep under it yet. That should happen this weekend. If the stick-on tabs don't work there's always the old reliable pebble and string method.

I haven't had much luck with tape tie-outs either. Instead I use small paracord balls and tie them off--works like a charm. I do, however, like to put a small layer of tape down where the paracord balls go, so they won't rub and fray the tyvek. Probably unnecessary, but much of what I do is

I responded to this thread in the weather protection forum, so you can find a bit more info there.
You're gonna need a bigger hammock

Wallyworld sells a really light, small blue poly tarp for about $3 that I like pretty well. It only has holes (no grommets), so I stitched ripstop nylon reinforcements at the tieouts. But, for the money, it is not bad and packs down pretty small.

Hi there, I have made a tarp from tyvek, and due to it's "wonderful" white color I also tried to paint it, with some sort of success.
On this forum i made some post with a video about the process and result, search for it, and hopefully it is useful for you.

Forget the fleabay tie-out tabs. Permanent? Not even close. They started sliding almost as soon as I'd hung it from the ridgeline. Fortunately I'm only out $7 - not worth the hassle of a dispute on fleabay. Tyvek tape gets another try

check out jspate61 channel on YouTube. he has some really good videos on making your own silnylon and also about making some tarps out of clear poly and clear duct tape. The clear poly tarps are SUPER CHEAP.

(I would put the links in but I don't have access to YT right now sorry)

I made a really great tarp out of just a painters tarp.

Now you cant just buy any painters tarp out there. most will just stretch and rip and deform.

I found at Lowes a specific vinyl painters tarp and if i remember it was 2mil thickness. kinda feels like the inner shower liner but thinner. then i just cut to my desired hex size of 8'x10'.
now this material is not strong enough by itself to be pulled taught at the ridgeline. This is where you will use clear duct tape. I split my ducktape so it was 1" wide instead of 2" and you run it the entire length of the ridgeline and then use it to make loops at the end. also same concept for the tie out point except you dont have to run it from corner to corner.

I think the vinyl tarp only cost like 3 buck so it is easily replacable. and i just used some small utility cord from AHE for the tie outs and suspension.

with suspension it came out to just over 13oz and maybe cost me $20
