And we're done! Final loft is a tad over 3 inches. In one of the photo's it shows the loft of the UQ folded double as 7 inches - still needs to be shaken around to evenly distribute the down in places. Gotta make a stuff sack next, I guess.

I still haven't decided the suspension type yet. We'll see after tonight.

    Looks great.
I think per ounce you got an even better deal on your Kmart down.

Thanks - I hope so, but didn't want to take a chance with the calculator values (used 500 for the fill number). Better safe than sorry. It's gonna be cold, wet and rainy here tonight - good testing weather!

Hey Lost Biker I really like the idea of making individual bags for stuffing. I wish I had thought of that. I ended up overstuffing my first one by a lot as I got loose with he measuring toward the end.

"Hmm.. that channel needs more. Now that channel needs more. Uh oh, now I used up another whole pillow..."

Now I need to make a lighter smaller one...

And it's all your fault MAD777! If you and several others didn't have such good directions and advice (and time to answer silly questions), I couldn't have done it! Well.......I could have, but it wouldn't have turned out right.

Thanks, but it was Fronkeys idea and video on how to. I just weighed the bag, then put down in the bag till it hit the right amount. I didn't know the zip lock bags I was using weighed 0.25 ounce and had to add more to the bags to be a true 3 oz. 0.25 oz doesn't seem like much till you see the big pile it makes.

I was very tempted to add more down, but waited to shake everything down and let it loft - took 30 minutes to see that big a loft.

I now have 3 cats sleeping on my underquilt. Gonna have to reclaim it for tonight!

Thanks for the wonderful tutorial...I am planning on making a couple of these soon for me and my son. I am getting tired of the hacked-up 1976 sleeping bag UQ. I just wish I could find some of those wonderful Kmart pillows.
I didn't understand your post till I reread my own - major laugh when I saw it. As a side note - no thongs were harmed in the making of this underquilt!

Last night dipped into the mid 40's and the underquilt performed quite well - I was toasty. It's just long enough and wide enough for me and my WBBB. I'm using the simple JRB type suspension for now. I have enough down left over so I will be making 2 draft tubes for the ends.

One thing I would have changed - I should not have used grossgrain on the edges. I should have used the ripstop and made channels. The grossgrain does not scrunch well - I noticed small gaps on both ends. The baffles will solve that problem. The grossgrain - all 7 yards of it - isn't really needed.

Overall, I'm happy with the results. It's a bit heavy, but not bad at all. I learned a great deal on this project, so the next one will be better. I'm sold on down now - it's definitely the way to go for light, warm insulation.

The temps got down to the mid 30's a few nights ago and the UQ was very warm. If temps are in the 50's, it's too warm and I start to sweat. Using the JRB type cord locks, the UQ snugs up tight and doesn't move around at night with my tossing and turning.

Next UQ is going to be 850+ down so it'll be lighter in weight.
