    Bugs this time of year

I am hiking from NOC to Glingman's starting 09/22. Can anyone give me an insight of what I should expect mosquito/bug wise this time of year? Is clothes treatment necessary?

I live in western nc and bugs aren't too bad this time of the year at night because temps are at or below 50 usually. Gnats are terrible during the day though. A few Mosquitos if you stop for lunch near a damp area but nothing too crazy. I hiked to the NOC on the AT a few months ago and got destroyed by biting flies so I'd come prepared with some bug spray for your arms and legs at least. I haven't found a thing to stop the gnats though. Good luck on your hike. That is a beautiful area of the AT.

I live in a rich town and they pay big $ to be bug free...lottsa bats help too... we sling shot dough balls in the air and watch 'em dive bomb after them...we surmised we could probably catch one with a fishing pole and a small rooster tail and fly it around like a kite once we caught it...but we didn't.
nail your shoes to the kitchen floor lace 'em up and bar the door and thank the lucky stars for the roof over you

Back when i was a mean little kid, we would tie a few short piece of uncoated bank line on a 1/2" or larger nut, fray the ends of the line and toss it up around a street light. The bats think it is a big bug, some times they hit it hard enough to knock them out.
