Gear and rain

There are lots of ways to do it...lots of folks just clip their backpack to the hammock support line. When I'm using a hammock without a bug net, I'll clip it onto the structural ridgeline...then I can slide it to the end of the hammock when I don't need it, and slide it down to the middle of the hammock to get stuff out of it.

Gear hammocks work well, too. Or a Blackbird's shelves, or the Ridgerunner's saddlebags, or a peak bag.

I am another that advocates hanging with a trashbag or pack cover. But I do like the gear hammock idea. Thats a hardcore hammocker. And Jeff, if you were in a tent, you would have literally been up the creek without a paddle.

So with the rain coming in last night i thought what better chance to test out my setup. Luckily i was in the backyard becasue when i woke up there was about 6in of water under my hammock. So the question is I see all you guys saying just throw your bag on the ground under you on a mat of some sort. Well that clearly wouldn't have worked this time. Any other ideas?

As an assistant Scout Master with the scouts we teach the boys about site location. It's one of the rank requirements. Always check for widowmakers and make sure your not in a low spot that will collect water if you get a hard rain are the 2 biggest. I either hang my pack on my ridgeline, or lean it against a tree with a trash bag over it.

i watched a youtube video the hiker was on the AT and he would hang his gear on the whoopie sling on one end of the hammock getting his gear off the ground . if you are intrested in seeing his videos you can enter loner2012at in the search , that might give you a better idea
