they have those ultra-light vests that you fill with some sort of gas for insulation and the gas is supposed to be lighter than air so it carrying it would in its little containers doesn’t add much weight and they are really warm i am looking for the sight now and i will post a link could this technology possibly be used to make an inflatable under quilt.

The gas may be lighter than air, but the canister needed to carry the gas are not. They would also take up a lot of space in the pack, so for backpacking I don't think it would be practical.
There is still the problem with convection currents within the UQ that would make it less effective than down, which blocks the convection currents from occuring.

Lots of good questions and good info in this thread. A year or so ago it would have taken 50+ replies to collect this much useful material.
My 2 cents: drybags from cuben suggested the possibility of a cuben DAM built into an insulated hammock, but I wasn't sure how well a valve or even the cuben seams would stand up to use, so I made it just an insulated hammock, relying on gravity to help loft the down (similar to an underquilt). I used very light cuben for the bottom layer, and found it wasn't strong enough, so I converted it to an underquilt. Works okay now (with potential for condensation issues, though). This is documented in my "Little Gray Cloud" thread. I like stuff sacks made with CT.3K.08. You could put them in a Garlington Insulator, but I can't think of a way to connect them to each other without adding weight and cost.
By the way, Fin, I sent you a couple on loan for your thruhike when you and Adam were first testing cuben. How did they hold up in longterm use?
