    WallyWorld Straps

    Mornin' Y'all,

I need a little help. I need a set of tree straps for a hammock I recently made for my better half. At the moment, budget constraints seem to be pointing me toward retasking a set of tie-down straps (ratchet straps?) from wallyworld instead of ordering a simple sling from strapworks (being broke sucks).

When I looked at the straps available at wallyworld the other day, I couldn't tell which were made of polyester from the packaging. Can anyone tell me which straps will are polyester and which are nylon? Also, I see different strengths ranging from 300 to about 700 lbs. My first thought would be to go with the highest rated strength...of course, those are more expensive. Which might be the most suitable?

    Thanks,

    Steve D

I've been using these and they hold very well and are very cheap. Just cut off the buckles and put the tag end through the loop.

Hammocking, car camping, backpacking, kayaking, and mountain biking. Getting in touch with nature is getting expensive. Good thing I can DIY!

Closest HF is about 25 miles from me...but...even with shipping added in, those are pretty darn cheap...

Were you looking in automotive or sporting? I just got mine and at first saw the 2 in auto and asked myself the same questions. I then got to the sporting goods area and in with the tarps and such I found what I knew to be the right ones. I will see if I can post a picture later.

On a side note if you have an rei close by they have 30' of strap in there climbing section for less then or close to the amount i paid in wally. Those dont come with the closed loops at the end, but you have enough webbing to double it over and loop it thru and then use a msh. Or you can use a knot or even sew it up. I am going home today and finish sawing off the metal from my wally straps.

Think I was looking in automotive. Mostly ratchet straps there. Please post a pic of the packaging if you can.

There is a REI dangerously close to my office so that is an option too. Its simple enough to double the end of a strap over and sew in a few box-x's or 3 or 4 bar tacks.

I know the eye test doesn't mean anything but the rei stuff looked better.

Do NOT go to the sewing/craft area and look for webbing. It will not be a good choice. I made that mistake once. Never again.
I may be slow... But I sure am gimpy.

I got a set of straps from WW and they have done fine. I just cut off the ratchet and tied a loop. They were about $6? I got mine in the sporting good section.

I think there is a difference between nylon and polyester webbing? I don't remember, and I don't recall what the ratchet straps are made of, something to do with stretch IIRC...

Yep, its all about stretch. Nylon does, polyester doesn't...
