    hammock insulation is all backwards

So I was reading about layering clothing to stay warm today while laying in my hammock. The basics are inner moisture wicking layer like silk, a middle insulating layer like fleece, and an outer shell to keep the weather off you. My mind went instantly to my hammock. Seems like the sleeping bag is the first layer and is the insulation followed by a hammock which does nothing for warmth followed by a under quilt for warmth but is fragile to the weather. Cover it all with a tarp and call that a shell? My thought was why not make a hammock that is more like an under quilt thats strong enough to support a body laying in it. Warm and comfy. Then have a traditional hammock that acts as a shell to take the place of the underquilt? Put a tarp over that and there you have it. I hope I have made clear my question. What do you all think? Why has this not been done or has it?

Sounds about like a DownHammock and HammockSock combo.

Yeah thats about what I was thinking of just toned down a little bit. I was thinking basically of an underquilt that you would tie off to the tree and lay in it. Then you have insulation everywhere, no cold spots. The sock is a great idea, just might have to get me one of those! I cant believe I had not seen(at least I dont remember) those on your site before. Thanks for the link

The sock threads heat up this time of year (PUN INTENDED)!

During the summer months, not many people talk about socks or down hammocks, cause nobody is actively thinking of those things when it's 90* in the shade and humid as all get out. Do a little tag searching on sock, weather sock, or insulated hammock and see what you find. I know there has to be a hundred different threads on socks alone, they just aren't all tagged.

Check the first version of the insulated hammock for full-length insulation with no cold spots. http://www.tothewoods.net/HomemadeGearDownHammock.html
I didn't like how this one worked but the fix is easy...I just chose to do the torso-area one with a CCF foot pad to save weight.
