    Question Whip it???

Hey folks, I just got comfortable making whoopie slings with a fixed brommel on one end. I'm anxiously awaiting a tablecloth to come in the mail for a DIY. I've read a lot about "whipping" the ends of an open hammock and fixing those ends to your suspension of choice. My question is this: Can I just use the end with the fixed brommel to "whip" the end of the hammock kind of like a bowline, or do I have to actually use some more cordage to "whip" the ends together and then attach it to my suspension? My common sense says I don't need the extra cordage, but I'd love some input before I put it to the test. Thanks in advance!

Also, if I do indeed need the extra cordage, is there an actual whipping method that I should use? I've got plenty more amsteel, but I'd like to use it for other DIY projects if possible.

No need to whip, just larkshead the whoopie to your hammock.
I prefer doing a double wrap.

No need, however it adds a bit of protection and helps the larkshead from sliding off by accident. It also keeps the ends gathered in he fashion you folded them if you happen to use a folding style gather. Any whipping style will work. Most use the style outlined on just jeffs hammock diy.

An alternative is to not use a fixed loop but instead attach the whoopie to the hammock body via a slipped Sheet Bend or slipped double sheet bend.

If you decide to whip it for added security, let me show you how I did it.

Gather your ends, pull the corners out to remove some of the slack edges and the secure the end with a cable tie.

Fold the end over and turn the cable tie so that the "buckle" is facing out, not into the fabric.

Whip the end and tie off with a surgeon's knot. (This shows a square knot) I recommend gutted paracord for whipping the ends.

Larkshead your whoopie sling or continuous loop behind the whipping and you're all set.

I whipped some hammocks, but really became a fan of the overhand knot method. Gather the hammock in your preferred way, then simply tie the end in an overhand knot. No extra cordage needed. Then larkshead your suspension behind the knot, and that thing won't ever slip. Plus it is SO much easier than whipping...

I saw this and tried it sucessfully using a linen bed sheet as a temporary hammock, but it would be fine for a permanent solution, dead easy, no stitching and doesn't slip,

Just take a look and try it for yourself, it can always be untied

    Good luck, Jeff
