    Calculating Down Volume for Baffles

I’m planning on attempting my first DIY projects with a hammock, top quilt and under quilt. I’ve done a lot of research and reading here on Hammock Forums to prepare and plan. I think I’ve got a pretty good idea of what I’m getting into and how to achieve the end product I’m looking for. The one thing that I have begun to question is how to calculate the volume of down needed for each of my top quilt’s baffles. I know that I need to multiple the length, height and width of my baffles and divide that by my down’s FP, but when looking at the height should I use the measured height of my nanoseeum baffle fabric or do I need to use the height of the loft I would like to achieve? Any help would be appreciated.

Open the spread sheet in the above thread and find all your answers.
If you are like me, you will calculate based on baffle height, then on total chamber height, then be amazed at the powers of down, then doubt the powers of down, then second guess yourself and then finally just start cutting and sewing.

    Good luck.

I have the quilt calculator for both the top and bottom quilts. I guess I just want to understand the calculations they are providing better. I feel like if I understand it better it will lead to a better end product.

You can wildly manipulate the spread sheet to see what it is "thinking".
Enter 2" baffles and 18" chamber height.
Also, enter 2" baffle height and increase chamber height from 2, 2.5, 2.75.

    length x width x height. 80" long x 6" wide x 2.5" high devide by fill power

80x6x2.5= 1200 sq in if 900 fill it 1.33 oz of down if 800 fill 1.5 oz down 700 fill 1.71 oz of down.
