I wish I could make it, but this is the same weekend as Southern Ruck at Nantahala Outdoor Center. I'll be giving a hammock workshop there.

Send the little guy to do the workshop and you go to the hang.

I have a job interview in southwest Virgina not to far from Grayson Highland. If I get the job, I'll probably join you guys! If I don't get the job, I'm about 2.5 hours away max from this area and I could probably still make it. I backpacked this area during my 3rd year of college and can't wait to backpack the open ridge of the Virgina highlands, again. I'll let you all know as it gets closer to time, I have marked the event down as a list of things to do.

You could buy some Hot Hand in body size and toss it in your sleeping bag and as it release heat your sleeping bag should trap the heat fairly well... Or you could get a one those emergency bivy sack to put over your sleeping bag.

Yea, two bags, used as quilts I guess, will do fine. Remember, any insulation you lay on will compress, thereby loosing insulation value.
As example, I can & have used my VERY OLD quilt on top of me, & my No Sniv on top of that. Under me (from hammock out) is: Homemade 3/4 length synthetic, a New river quilt & the hammock sock form Mac. IF I need to, my sit pad goes under my back & I wear a knit hat & sometimes gloves. That means I'm good to 0 F at least. AND, as mentioned, those chemical hot packs are WONDERFUL!
Hint about the air activated hot packs: when you open the pack, give the hot pack a little shake & it will heat faster. If it seems to die, take it out & shake it again. Mine usually last at least 8 hours. ALSO, & this is IMPORTANT: DO NOT PRE-TREAT (pre-heat) UNLESS YOU ARE ALREADY VERY COLD! If you are already mildly warm, adding heat can cause you to get much warmer, thereby sweating & getting wet, wet means cold! One trick I have done, even if I didn't use one at night, I activate that nights hot pack & cover it with my top quilt(s) giving them the chance to dry out as I'm doing other stuff. Worked like a champ last weekend at the Halloween hang!
