There isn't a significant difference in shape between a conventional Hammock suspension with SRL set up "tight" (as in much less than 30 deg) and an SLS. The issue is most Structural Ridge Lines (SRL) are not designed to handle the load that being in an SLS configuration would put on them. As the suspension gets flatter, the load on it goes up significantly so that you could exceed the rated capacity of you SRL.

If you want the math, GrizzlyAdams posted it here

a = Angle from tree strap to where hammock joins Suspension
b = Angle of Hammock at junction with SRL
w = Weight of Hammock, UQ, TQ and Hammocker
    p = Load on SRL
    a b w P
    30° 30° 150 lbs 128 lbs
    25° 30° 150 lbs 159 lbs
    20° 30° 150 lbs 204 lbs
    15° 30° 150 lbs 278 lbs
    10° 30° 150 lbs 424 lbs
    5° 30° 150 lbs 856 lbs
    4° 30° 150 lbs 1071 lbs
    3° 30° 150 lbs 1429 lbs
    2° 30° 150 lbs 2146 lbs
    1° 30° 150 lbs 4295 lbs

The SLS is designed with this high load in mind, which is why many choose 1/8" AmsteelBlue for the 2500 lb breaking strength over the 1600lb rating of 7/64.

@Olddog, thanks for sharing this. I got mine mostly knocked out this afternoon in 7/64. Time for me to order some 1/8" AmsteelBlue.

Does anyone have any experience burying 7/64 amsteel loops in 1/8 amsteel? Will it hold? Would I need to sew it in place to make sure it doesn't un-bury?

Instead of burying loops mid-line, why not splice in a locked Brummel loop? Instead of burying the "tail" it's the other end of your line.

You are welcome Ed. I enjoy sharing this stuff with other hangers and seeing how it develops with the additional input of others. My thanks goes out to headchange4u, BearChaser and others who started me out on the SLS search.

As for the buried loops, I now have a total of 6 of 7/64", the 2 outboard ones are for the tarp, the 2 inboard of those are for the hammock suspension and the last 2 are centered on the SLS for a small gear hammock. The tarp and hammock loops have been stitched just to keep them shifting while the SLS is slack.

Mike (MDSH) had an idea about burying an extended tail on a loop into and back out of the SLS which would allow adjusting or tightening of the tarp or hammock suspension. I'm thinking of replacing the short whoopies that are used for the hammock suspension and have tested the idea but haven't load tested it yet. A couple of 30" sections of 7/64" with endloops larksheaded to the hammock ends would be about as simple as you could get.

Been trying to get my latest version back up for some better pics. Maybe sometime soon.

This is helpful. 7/64 burried into 7/64 wasn't working very well.

I'd thought about UCR like adjustable lines for the tarp attachment but was concerned that it would add too much length to the SLS.

Finally got around to some pictures of the final version of my hardware free SLS.
    #1= tree hugger with nacrabiner
#2= SLS end whoopie thru tree hugger loop
#3= whoopie tail and tarp connection loop
#4= whoopie tail, tarp connection loop and hammock loop with nacrabiner
    #5= gear hammock

The opposite end is a mirror of the end shown.

    That is so awesome!

Okay, that does it -- I've got to make some nacrabiners.

That is the true UL solution, for sure.

Did you hang from the buried loops yet, olddog?

Just some nap time, still too hot down here for an overnighter. Still contemplating replacing the hammock whoopies with your idea for the Sliding Buried Loops. Don't do a lot of adjusting on the hammock whoopies but I do like being able to tweek them and the SBL's might cut a few more grams.

Good to see pictures, ordering some amsteel to make a SLS. Might go up to 5/32 dia. (rated at 4000lbs) to have some leeway as the angles are narrowed up. A question I have relates to the "soft on soft" aspect of the amsteel connecting to the webbing. I have seen rope and cord cut through webbing in fairly short order and was wondering if that can be a problem as the amsteel moves around in the webbing.

Haven't noticed any indications of wear yet Meerkat. I haven't that many hours on it yet but there doesn't seem to be very much movement at the whoopie to hugger conection.
