Pop tart trip to Stone Mtn. NC

Took off right after work Thursday with my buddy Rob. Got to Stone Mountain & did a little trout fishing before we hiked up to the backpacking sites along Widow's Creek Trail. We hiked in the dark to our site, set up and cooked some late dinner. We woke around 4 am to the sound of what we guessed were at least three coyotes howling, but managed to get some more sleep. I have never heard that before! After breekfast from the hammock we packed up and hit the local streams again for a few fishless hours until we had to head home. It was short but sweet. It was great just to be outside. We had a great campsite that was just beautiful in the daylight Pics are my setup & view from the hammock. did you have to pay? I usually drive an hour and 10 minutes to the uwharrie mountains to camp for free.

The backpacking sites are $10 per night. We have been & are closer to the Uwharries, but we were hoping for some good fishing. My first backpacking trip was in the Birkhead Forest and I really enjoyed it. Love to go back again.

I just wish I had free places closer. 20 or 26 a day for me and my son to camp is expensive. I could stay in a hotel for mot much more.

I agree. It would hurt my feelings to have to pay that! Luckily we are maybe 45 minutes from the Uwharries. Anyway, Stone Mountain is nice and it has great trout fishing...unless I am the one fishing!

Looks like a nice little trip. You should check out the Linville Gorge for great free backpacking, it's about another hour to hour and half west of Stone Mountain, but the views can't be beat. Not sure about the fishing, but I'm sure there are more than a few trout in the river.

I have still yet to make it to Uwharrie, certainly on my bucket list though.

If you can make it to the Neusiok Trail you can camp for free along the trail.

I am aware that I can camp at any national forest or park. The uwharries are the closest. I just wish I could get a year pass for the state parks. I understand that those parks usually supply other activities which is why they charge to stay, but I one need to hang. I don't need anything the woods isn't already supplying. I know why they charge I am just saying there should be a different option.
