    Hancock Fabrics

So, a good friend of mine pointed out to me that despite the fact that her mother is no longer the regional manager of Hancock Fabrics down here, she still gets 20% off.

She's taking me to the store with her so I can get some stuff (whatever I want), but I need a shopping list.

This is the first time I've ever been fabric shopping, and the first time I've done any DIY work. What kinda stuff should I look for? The only thing I KNOW I wanna pick up is gross grain ribbon.

    Any other suggestions?

tulle (for bugnet material) and misc colors of ripstop. if you have kids, they will soon want hammocks of their own as well so you might want some "styled" fabric. Last i could think of would be some cotton canvas, for a fulltime hammock or a deep winter sock. Make sure you get a lot, then you can give us all a deal (i.e. group buy for us)

That's about all i can think of...

But be ready for the wierd looks, especially when you ask what weight the fabric (nylon in particular) is. I don't think they expect us dudes to be in a fabric store without the missus, nor do they have the info to give you. just bet that it's 1.9 ripstop and go on about your merry way.

Elastic cord, grommets, heavy flat ribbon material, and a good sewing machine.

+1 on a machine, and some good scissors. i wouldnt spend much money on the stuff hancock has...i've never been impressed with their selection...diygearsupply has way better stuff, and it's probably cheaper (even with 20 percent off). just my 2 cents!

I've got the machine covered. Wife recently got me a Bernette 90e that she got in new condition (only used once) for $75.

Checking the prices on DIYGearSupply, I'll compare 'em to Hancock with 20% off.

As far as group buys, depending on what my friend the sail maker says I may suggest a group buy for cuben fabric. Another friend in the sail-making business says cuben fabric is antiquated for sail making, and there's way better stuff...which I'm curious to see and maybe see about using for some DIY.

Here is a 40% off coupon:

I was there the other day and they have some Camo Outdoor fabrick that is quilted with some kind of insulation between the camo and tan colored fabric that i thought may make a decent underquilt. It was $13.99 a yard. They also had some riptop nylon in various colors.

Cuban fabric antiquated? I just did a search for high tech sailcloth and the results made my head hurt.
