    Velcro® Zipper Help

im working on converting a down bag into a quilt. im cutting off the zipper and extending the slit 2'. i want to put Velcro on it so it could still be used as a bag. in my search i found there are different grades. soft, stick-on (would this even work?), sew-on, industrial, (R), etc. help educate me on this and where to purchase. What would YOU suggest?

omni tape or velcro free magic, both pieces are the same rather than traditional hook on one side and loop on the other. you can get it from wbc industries, but i think you have to buy a roll, not sure where to buy a short piece.

JRB sells Omni-Tape in a kit. I guess you could use pieces of it, or maybe try to make something using the whole kit?

Does this bag have a hood?
Hooded bags can be tedious to use as quilts. Some hoods when removed can be converted into balaclava-like things.
Velcro of any type is tedious to use compared to a zipper.
Do you plan to remove the draft tube? It is extraneous to a quilt, but a nice thing to have on a sleeping bag.
Why not just go all the way and turn the bag into a dedicated quilt?

I see you are in Penns Grove....no too far away. See if you have a JoeAnne's fabric store around you. The one in Woodbury usually stocks omni -tape. Very easy to sew on after making your final seams.

Sometimes you can find omni-tape at Walmart in 18" increments. They always have velcro like that. Not sure about Velcro Magic specifically.

But I agree with Spock - using velcro on something that long is tedious every time you get in. That's about the only gripe I have about the PeaPod, although it does preserve the flexibility needed for ventilation in that particular product...but still, lining up that length of velcro is a pain.

i agree. was going to do quilt in two lengths (as to climb in like a mummy bag if needed) the velcro was to just give the quilt duel use, if heaven forbid, i need to go to the ground.
    any thoughts

a reg sleeping bag used as a quilt is almost too wide in a hammock. you could make it narrower (48-54" wide) and still use it on the ground with no trouble. just tuck the sides under your body just like you do in a hammock.

is it a full length zipper?
