making an UQ and need opinions.

So, I've got myself a twin size down filled quilt and when I fold it in half i get it approx 5 and 1/2ft long by 3 and 1//2 feet wide with about 6" high fill, so my thought is this.
Can i stitch this up (and maybe baffle it a bit more for more fill )and stitch or tie in some stretchy cord and use this as an UQ with a separate undercover beneath this made up from an old tent fly cut and stitched up to shape? Or does anyone see any obvious problems with this that I'm not thinking of? Also, any corrections to my design or thoughts on how to make it better would be appreciated! And finally does anyone think i should use a space blanket (heavy duty type with one side silver and the other red tarp)as an outer cover instead of the old fly?
    Any thoughts welcome, thanks folks.

May I suggest that you not change it at all? Make a Garlington insulator and use the quilt intact as the insulation.

    http://www.garlington.biz/Ray/Hammoc.../Insulator.htm

The Garlington would be good for the slightest windbreak to holding greater amounts of stuff underneath.

With the proper suspension it could even hold pads snug against the hammock, perhaps?

My dream is to make one of M50.

You are a little narrow, depending on your own girth.

There is also a lot of loft. The trick will be to pin it togeher and then suspend it from inside and above the top edge, so that you are pulling the top layer against the bottom of the hammock. The rest is permitted to hang, with as little compression as possible. If you suspend from the edge of the bottom half, it is likely that you will compress the loft substantially once you are in the hammock.

I'd suggest you get an assistant as an occupant, so you see how it hangs, and then make adjustments.
