Field test of the "Dirty Bird" DB clone

I finally got a chance to get out and field test some of my new gear including my DIY "Dirty Bird" danger bird/hennesy hybrid.

Being that the hammock is a dual layer tablecloth, it's not exactly light but man is this thing comfy. It was a rather precarious hang for the first field test (it's been tested at home) as I was hanging on the edge of a 30 foot or so drop. Everything on/for the hammock was DIY including the suspension/tree straps. Most of the materials were purchased from Scott at DIY gear supply. He is great to deal with and has awesome prices.

My stitching skills are not great but they are'nt terrible either and I think it turned out quite good.

The winter tarp I'm making is almost done and will be field tested along with my DIY UQ and offset stakes hopefully in about a month. The stakes were another members idea, Alamosa, and I just tweaked them a bit. I also have a single layer 30D ripstop bridge hammock in work.

Interested in these offset stakes... can you elaborate on them?

The idea is that the top piece (in my case the larger aluminum tube) runs parallel to the ground and the smaller spike piece is pushed in the ground at an angle. Whatever your'e staking is tied to the end of the top piece. The pressure pulling up and forward on the top piece levers the spike oposite of what a normal stake does and it actually makes it more secure in the ground. From what I hear, this is how some snow stakes are made.

    stakes

The stakes were by Alamosa called the stake boom. What type of material are they made from. I am have made some out of galvanized pipe but they weight too much.
    Looks Great. Great Job

Thanks, I updated the original post.

The spikes are 1/4" 302 stainless tubing with 3/8" stainless bar stock welded to the tops (the part that looks like a nail head) to act as a stop as well as reinforce for hammering. They're 6-1/2" long roughly. The top bars are 3/8" 2024 aluminum tubes. After trying to drill them didn't work so well, I milled the holes. I know some guys that make aircraft hydraulic lines and the materials were their scrap.

Their very light and the fact that they nest makes them very easy to pack. Hopefully I'll get a chance to test them soon. I'm also hoping that they're not going to be too small. I made them specifically to tie out my DIY tarp.
