I use the unscented, after hearing about that bear encounter last year. It's great stuff; a couple drops on the corner of a bandanna go a long way towards combating hiker funk.

Works pretty well in that category. The trick is to use a very small amount in order to avoid the "soap mouth" flavor. You'll know when you used too much......

Amazing stuff, I use it at home, but would emphasize the lack of scent. I had issues with porcupines being attracted to the scented stuff. Just about ate up some dishes that had been washed in it. Lost a really nice Maple spatula. They had no fear.

I love the stuff.. aside from the weird rantings on the label. At home, I use the almond scent (smells like Disaronno!) as soap/shampoo. In the piney woods, its peppermint or unscented and becomes toothpaste as well. I'll reinforce the aforementioned TINY AMOUNT suggested by others, should you decide to put it on a toothbrush. I get mine from Amazon, but have found it at REI, Target, and Whole Foods as well.

    Just to pile on...

The Almond is great at home/hotels (smells too much like dessert to take in the woods), peppermint anywhere else. One of these days I may branch out to citrus and tea tree. Personally, I've never been brave enough to try it as toothpaste.

    Available through:
    REI http://www.rei.com
    Mountain High Outfitters http://www.mountainhighoutfitters.com/
    Amazon
(search for "Dr. Bronner's" or "castile soap" or both)
and finally http://www.drbronner.com/ should you decide to cut straight to the chase.

Me too but I stay away from the gallon size now. I had one gallon that hardened on me before I used it up. Lost about a quart of it I guess. Took some of the bargain out of that deal.

Now I stick with the quart size.

I am a fan of Dr. Bronners as well. Can use it for everything from toothpaste, to clean dishes, and clean clothes.

Yes small amount is key! It lathers up surprisingly well.

I usually buy the small 4 Oz bottle for backpacking

trader joes has the big bottle for $10 if I remember correctly. The label makes for some interesting reading when your it gets dark out early and you did not bring anything else to read. I still remember the wonderful feeling of that peppermint that pulled the sting out my legs from stinging nettles on the trail.

Yeah, i,ll second the unscented as those oils are pure! Peppermint could be a good bear attractant.

I bring one of those tiny little UL bottles of soap. More than enough...

I use a tiny drop on my toothbrush unless the teeth are extra fuzzy then i splash a bit of water in the brush. Seems to work well. A big difference when you get the right amount vs littlte too much.
